Job Description

CookJob Type: Part Time, PermanentLocation: Horstead, NorfolkWorking Hours: 30 Hours per week. Hours worked will be flexible to meet the needs of the Centre and will include breakfast and dinner-time sittings, and occasionally weekend work too.You will work more hours during busier periods but fewer weekly hours during Winter Months to balance thisSalary: £19,047£20,316 pro rata DOECompany Benefits:

The Horstead Centre is a residential outdoor activity centre, situated on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. We provide wonderful opportunities for children and young people to develop their personal, spiritual, and social growth through residentialstays and activity days.As an independent Charity, we are run in collaboration with the Diocese of Norwich. The Horstead Centre values include exceptional hospitality and a warm welcome for all our guests. We are currently looking for a Cook to enhance the Centres comfortable and homely social atmosphere, through good food and excellent guest care.The Role - Cook:As the Centres Cook, you will be responsible for formulating & monitoring the procedures for the Kitchen and Catering operations, with the support of the Manager and Administrator.To plan, prepare and serve meals to the resident guests. Maintaining a professional relationship with Centre staff and Visitors.Main Responsibilities - Cook:
  • Be the primary point of contact for residential guests for any issues relating to catering
  • Liaise with office on menus, special dietary requirements, supplies, stock levels, stock rotation & deliveries
  • Ensure food waste is kept to a minimum
  • Organise, train and supervise all other staff involved in food preparation & serving
  • To organise and/or undertake the cleaning and sanitisation of the kitchen and dining room following the meals
  • Prepare the packed lunch table and breakfast for the following day
  • Organise and oversee bi-annual deep cleans of the kitchen and food storage areas
  • Formulate & monitor procedures for all the Centres kitchen and catering operation, with the support of the manager and administration
  • Responsible for the service and maintenance of equipment, cleaning, health, hygiene and food safety, based on the guidelines provided through Safer Food, Better Business
  • Help to oversee the Food Standards Agency inspections
  • Maintain meticulous up to date records for unannounced inspections, to ensure we maintain our 5-star rating each year
Person SpecificationCookPersonal Qualities:
  • Fully understanding customer needs, making it a priority to satisfy them
  • Be able to forward plan, develop a clear plan to achieve objectives
  • Confidently work well within a team, with enthusiasm to share skills & train others
  • Readiness and ability to take responsibility and use initiative
  • Empathy with the Christian ethos of the Centre
Experience and Qualifications:
  • Relevant training/experience in planning, preparing and cooking simple food for groups of 30+ children and adults
  • Planning, preparing, cooking and serving food under time restraints and to budget
  • Experience of preparing, cooking and serving food within UK Food Safety and Hygiene Regulations
  • Working knowledge of the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme
  • Prepared to undertake HABC Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering every 3 years
  • Experience of handling special dietary requirements as part of group catering
  • Knowledge or experience of handling issues that can arise from feeding groups of children away from home for the first time
  • Interest in Outdoor Education, First Aid Qualification and Fire Extinguisher Training an advantage
