Job Description

Technical Lead Mechanical EngineerA rapidly expanding space related company are searching for an experienced Technical Lead Mechanical Engineer to join their multi-disciplinary engineering team. The company design and manufacture cutting edge, customised products on their Basingstoke site in compact lead times. With new projects having recently come into the business and more on the horizon, they have need for intuitive Technical Lead Mechanical Engineers to join the team, providing a leadership function in building smart innovations into their future product designs.The Role of Technical Lead Mechanical EngineerThe Technical Lead Engineer will use their strong technical abilities and good organisation/ communication skills to become the subject matter expert for their field. The role will involve mentoring a small mechanical design team, developing and documenting company standards and taking responsibility for the robust design and documentation of components and assemblies integral to the completed product.About You

  • A highly motivated self-starter, able to work autonomously, effectively, accurately and efficiently.Qualified Mechanical Engineer to degree level or above or time served equivalent industry experience.
  • Hold demonstrable experience leading and mentoring a team of mechanical design engineers.
  • Driven to standardise parts for wider use and reduced redesign while documenting best practices.
  • Experienced in managing the whole product life cycle.
  • Passionate, hands-on engineer comfortable with efficiently prioritising own workload with leadership duties.
  • Maintain a broad range of varied and relevant experience working as a mechanical design engineer.A mature history of 3D parametric CAD and PDM systems.
  • A learned understanding of designing machined, cast, pressed, fabricated and composite components.
  • Practiced in performing GD&T analysis and working with tight tolerances for dynamic assemblies.An ability to generate concise unambiguous drawings and reports.
    • Key Duties
  • Leading the design of antenna components related to their specialism.
  • Developing the product roadmap for their specialism and contributing to standardisation and design methodology.
  • Generating and maintaining standard catalogue items for their antenna specialism based on current and future customer options.
  • Promoting good practice and a culture of right first time, design for repeatable manufacture.
  • Generating and agreeing product concepts and specifications through to finalised product designs.
  • Producing product related documentation.
  • Review and action development and production change notes as required with consideration of business impact. Actively participate in 8D investigations.
  • Designing composite mouldings, castings and other mechanical piece parts to meet the product requirements in the most cost-effective way.Specifying COTS items, utilising standard parts and performing DFMEA’s and design reviews.Checking engineering calculations, designs and drawings produced by engineering team.
  • Populating and maintaining the design database and archive.
  • Mentoring and developing team members through 1-2-1’s and annual reviews to develop technical knowledge within the team in own subject matter.
  • working with marketing and engineering.Liaising with production, procurement and the electrical, electronic, RF and software engineering departments.
  • Other duties as assigned from time to time.

  • Creo and DDM knowledge is preferred, however other similar packages would be considered transferrable.
  • Ability to perform DFMEA’s is advantageous.
  • An understanding of electrical and / or software engineering is useful.Experience with analysis tools such as FEA is not essential but would be advantageous.
