Key Responsibilities of the SEND Assessment and Review Assistant:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families and professionals during the initiation of the Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment process, ensuring strict adherence to the legal framework.
  • Manage a caseload efficiently, allocating resources appropriately to ensure compliance with the timelines outlined in the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Maintain regular and sensitive communication with families and young individuals throughout the EHCP process, providing clear explanations of procedures and ensuring their active involvement in assessment and planning.
  • Engage in direct liaison with parents, colleagues, and relevant professionals regarding requests for needs assessment and annual reviews. Monitor the submission of reports upon receipt to guarantee that the local authority fulfils its legal obligations.
  • Assume responsibility for the initial processing of new Education, Health, and Care (EHC) assessment requests, which entails logging the requests, forwarding them to the appropriate SEND Officer, and updating the database to ensure accurate recording ofstatutory timescales.
  • Develop and oversee the progress of individual cases in collaboration with Assessment & Review Officers, ensuring strict adherence to timelines and minimizing the risk of legal challenges against the authority.
  • Collaborate closely with Assessment and Review officers to facilitate the EHC annual review process. This involves logging and acknowledging receipt of annual review documentation from schools and coordinating with relevant Assessment and Review Officersto ensure timely responses to parents, meeting statutory timeframes.
  • Establish effective communication channels with partners involved in the needs assessment process, ensuring prompt provision of clear and relevant information/advice.
  • Maintain the generic diary and oversee appointments for the Head of SEND Assessment and Review. This includes scheduling meetings, reserving rooms, taking minutes, and coordinating with partners.
  • Take the lead on preparing and verifying highly sensitive documentation for panels, ensuring compliance with statutory timescales for distribution of minutes while upholding information governance standards.
Applicant Requirements of the SEND Assessment and Review Assistant:
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in Special Educational Needs (SEN) Casework and writing Education, Health, and Care (EHC) Plans within a Local Authority context.
  • Recent experience within the past 2 years in Local Authority SEN settings is required.
  • Familiarity with key legislative frameworks such as The Children and Families Act 2014, SEND Code of Practice 2015, and SEND Regulations 2014 is essential.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
