  • Needs to be commercially aware, conscious of value for money considerations and works towards achieving the technical budget.
  • Helps to determine the budget required and oversees expenditure (but Head of Technical Resources manages the budget).
  • Customer
  • Prepares intellectual content to meet customer needs.
  • Obtains input from senior FDs whilst being sensitive to the time pressures that they face.
  • Operational
  • Manages areas of specialism and recommends CIMAs direction accordingly. Although final decision taken by Technical Committee/Council, needs to influence committee decision.
  • Develops thinking proactively in a specialised technical area in order to expand CIMAs intellectual capital.
  • Maximises impact of CIMAs stock of intellectual capital by using it creatively e.g. in different formats, applying it to the needs of different audiences etc.
  • Prepares technical material on timely basis.
  • Synthesises output from different sources in order to generate a coherent CIMA view on accounting and business issues e.g. accounting standards, company law etc.
  • Reviews colleagues work for quality control purposes to ensure that CIMAs reputation is maintained and enhanced.
  • Identifies and suggests contacts for involvement in CIMA projects.
  • Liaises regularly with project manager R&C to ensure that production timetable is developed and adhered to.
  • Liaises with Communications Department to ensure effective dissemination of outputs.
  • Provides advice to R&C on appropriate format for outputs and archiving policy.
  • Provides timely feedback to R&C on research projects in capacity as project partner.
  • Provides training and mentoring to other CIMA staff to ensure that they have adequate knowledge of management accounting e.g. Business Development Managers.
  • Liaises with external contacts e.g. members in order to ensure that their input is obtained on timely basis.
  • Provides appropriate briefing material and support for Chief Executive, Honorary Officers etc for use at external meetings, presentations etc.
  • Proactively looks for process improvements.
  • People
  • Proactively looks to cultivate external contacts and develop relationships.
  • Debates, presents and influences thinking in areas of specialism.
  • Must be a good team worker with collegiate attitude
  • Must maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers and contacts at all levels.
  • Represents CIMA at external meetings in a way that enhances CIMAs reputation and influences debate from the perspective of the professional accountant in business.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Able to grasp complex technical and business issues, often needing to deal with substantial volumes of material with the ability to adopt a critical and challenging approach.
  • Able to develop "raw" material into high quality intellectual content that increases CIMAs intellectual capital and contributes to the advancement of the science of management accountancy. Then apply content in creative and innovative ways to make effective use of limited supply of intellectual capital.
  • Able to develop externally recognised expertise in major technical workstream e.g. corporate governance, financial reporting, performance management.
  • Able to scan business environment effectively and develop possible opportunities and projects for CIMA.
  • Pro-active relationship building, particularly at senior level.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including media skills (expand on media skills)
  • Debating and influencing skills. Need to have the confidence to hold their own in discussions at external events with senior-level audiences.
  • Presentation skills (to present complex technical material at high-level external presentations)

  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office
  • Speed reading
  • Required Experience, Qualifications & Education:
  • Experience in a commercial organisation (medium to large corporate; and/or public sector at senior level e.g. in finance function, strategic planning and implementation, internal audit, consultancy background.
  • CCAB or postgraduate qualification in business/accountancy-related discipline.
  • Preferred Experience, Qualifications & Education:
  • Experience of policy work desirable.
  • CIMA qualification preferable
