Job Description

Our MOJ client requires Court Ushers to join the busy team on a temporary basis until 14th January 2025 to start ASAP. Contract likely to be extended.Our client HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice. HMCTS provides administrative support for the legal system across England and Wales, ensuring justice works for everyone. £10.95 per hour is the pay rate.Our client is based in Exeter and offers a great opportunity to work within the courts and gain experience. The role is temporary expected to run until 14th January 2025. Working full time 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday.Successful applicants would primarily be ushering within the court.Please note that this is a public facing role and you will be working in open court.It is an office-based role. Duties may include but not be limited to:Multi-jurisdictional Court Usher (covering Crown, County and Magistrates Courts) - acting as first point of contact for all court users involved in hearings, duties include:

  • Regular contact with judiciary and assisting admin staff with smooth flow of work.
  • Meet and greet members of public and legal representatives.
  • Prepare courts/hearing rooms and clearing down at the end of the day.
  • Collecting and delivering files to judiciary and clerks
  • Ensuring court runs smoothly/efficiently and assisting
  • Calling people into court, discussing with Court Clerks/Legal Advisers, liaising with Witness Service and Vulnerable & Intimidated Witness Team.
  • Deal sensitively and professionally with people from all walks of life; many of whom may be vulnerable and under stress.
  • Team working but, with management support, be responsible for own time.
  • Required to use a variety of in-house IT applications and assist with operating court room equipment, e.g., Video Links, hearing loops, recording and audio equipment, etc.
Our client requires the following skills:
  • Ability to react quickly and professionally to situations, some of which may be unexpected, whilst working within regulated guidelines
  • Ability to take a firm stance with those who may not understand or welcome procedures that need to be followed
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to multitask effectively
  • Ability to organise workload, and plan effectively
  • Strong resilience skills and ability to work under pressure
  • IT Literacy, including proficiency in MS applications; MS Word/Excel/Outlook/Teams etc. is essential
