Job Description

Laboratory ManagerAn excellent opportunity for individuals with experience of people management and implementing improvements within a laboratory environment to join a FMCG leader who supply their products globally based at a modern facility in Elton.Reporting into the Quality Compliance Manager and Oenologist within the Beverages team. Responsible for the continuing improvement of the laboratory systems and people to ensure a culture of right first time and continuous improvement for delivering the laboratory KPIs in line with the divisional expectations. Responsible for managing the laboratory within the constraints set by the budget, to ensure that service levels for all laboratory customers are maintained and exceeded.Qualities we look for;

  • Identify opportunities for technical advancement of the laboratory testing with a view to improving the accuracy and speed of results.
  • Accountable for the day to day management of the laboratory and dealing with any issues that arise.
  • First point of contact for shift workers for issue resolution. If there is the potential for harm to the consumer or product this must be escalated to the Quality compliance manager for further action.
  • Carry out all risk assessments for lab activities in conjunction with the Health and safety manager.
  • Ensure all procedures to contain reference to Risk assessment and PPE requirements and regular reviews are carried out.
  • Comply with Health & Safety and Environmental Policies, General Risk Assessments, Manual Handling Risk Assessments, COSHH Risk Assessments, Safe System of Work documents
  • Take appropriate actions in emergency situations
  • To ensure compliance with all Food Safety Legislation communicated through the Hygiene Policy, the Quality System and briefingsygiene Policy
  • Takes full responsibility for ensuring the safe working practices and conduct of the team
  • Ensure that all service contracts are up to date and that all scheduled calibrations have been carried out prior to the certificate expiry and organise service visits to ensure continued reliability of results.
  • Ensure that adequate parts/consumables for the equipment are in stores so that any repairs can be taken on in a timely manner.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects within the laboratory, by utilising the team effectively to ensure that the service levels to both internal and external customers are maintained, and expectations exceeded.
  • Empower team members to be outward looking and proactive in finding solutions to problems.
  • Use the laboratory KPIs to evaluate performance and set individual targets for team members.
  • Manage the laboratory processes to the standards required by ISO17025.
  • Ensure that purchase orders are placed in a timely manner in SAP.
  • Manage the 5s standards within the laboratory to improve general organisation and workflow.
  • To implement the HR policies and procedures within the laboratory.
  • Carry out regular performance reviews with the supervisors and microbiologists to identify skills gaps and opportunities for career development.
  • Ensure the supervisors are carrying out regular performance reviews with their team
  • Be an ambassador for the company values
  • Coach Supervisors in equipment maintenance and issue resolution.
  • To review the overall team development requirements from the output 1:1s to ensure a structured departmental development plan
  • Manage the holidays and absence such that overtime is required by exception.
