Job Description

Would you like to join a company which is now embarking on an ambitious plan to build a large-scale flow battery demonstrator which requires experienced, flexible and dedicated people that are passionate about making a difference If yes, thenthis could be an opportunity for you!About the RoleThe Mechanical Design Engineer(s) will be responsible for designing, prototyping and developing our ground-breaking SLIQ single liquid flow battery to facilitate manufacturing scale-up. The key area of focus in this role is the development for manufactureof the unique cells at the heart of the SLIQ system. Working closely with the other flow battery sub-teams within StorTera, the Mechanical Design Engineer(s) are part design engineer and part project manager to ensure the right solutions land on time, andmeet our requirements for capacity, quality and cost. This role requires (an) engineer(s) with a creative, enthusiastic and pragmatic approach to problem solving.Reporting to the Head of Product Design, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and have the opportunity to develop design & technical capabilities from concept stage through to materials processing and cell assembly & production. An ideal candidate is someone who is excited to collaborate with a diverse and dedicated team.Key Responsibilities:

  • Rapidly develop and evaluate concepts using the full suite of resources available; from 3D CAD modelling and simulations to hands-on prototyping and testing in the workshop and laboratory
  • Creation and verification of manufacturing drawings; Building relationships with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure design specifications, quality, cost and deadline requirements are met
  • Contribute to the development and optimisation of innovative new technologies that can be incorporated into the cell design, manufacturing processes and equipment needs to give a performance, cost, productivity or environmental advantage
  • You will become a subject matter expert and key point of contact for flow battery cell design development, working closely alongside the chemistry, electrical and process / manufacturing teams as the SLIQ scales to production readiness
  • Conduct proof of concept evaluation support and design of experiments during development, establishing baseline process and metrics through use of physical protoyping and simulations
  • Play an active role in supporting the understanding of future cell evolution requirements, working with the research teams to drive new specifications and further enhance our SLIQ technology
  • Exhibit clear presentation of technical information and supporting documentation to ensure accurate handover to cross functional teams
Essential Experience:
  • BEng / BSc minimum in relevant engineering or industrial/product design discipline
  • Minimum 3+ years experience of Solidworks modelling, including production of manufacturing drawings
  • Experience of design for manufacture of injection moulded components
  • Minimum 2+ years experience of FEA for verification of design specifications prior to manufacturing
  • Practical / hands-on experience - must be confident using basic workshop machinery and hand tools
  • Minimum 3+ years experience of supplier and manufacturing partner management
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience of working in manufacturing & process engineering environments
  • Design of automation equipment and integration of electrical & pneumatic systems
  • Knowledge of product testing, design verification test plans and FMEA analysis
