Job Description

NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Ayrshire and Arran4 month Fixed Term Specialty Doctor in Vascular SurgeryBased at University Hospital Hairmyres, LanarkshireThis post is to cover for maternity leave until the 2nd August 2021. The successful applicant will support a regional plan for a second major vascular unit in the West of Scotland covering the populations of NHS Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran and Dumfries and Galloway. As such it offers an excellent opportunity to gain a wide experience in vascular and endovascular surgery in a large, expanding unit which will serve approximately 1 million population and as such will be one of the largest vascular units in Scotland. Plans are at an advanced stage to deploy additional infrastructure including a state of the art hybrid operating theatre to compliment the surgical and interventional radiology facilities already available. At the end of this fixed term the successful applicant would be in an advantageous position to apply for any permanent post that may become available.University Hospital Hairmyres will be the hub for the new regional Centre. Significant work is already underway to have the three Health Boards fully integrated by the end of 2020. The first steps of this process have already begun. Since September 2019 all of Dumfries and Galloway’s emergency patients and all of their major vascular elective patients are admitted to UHH. Ayrshire’s vascular emergencies, Friday to Monday, are admitted to UHH and this is where the EVAR service and MDT is based. The successful applicant will be based in University Hospital Hairmyres where they will undertake a share of on call duties and other elective activities. However, until the full integration of Health Boards, they may also be asked to rotate, for a few weeks, to Ayrshire to cover clinics, ward rounds, theatre and other elective activities. NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s clinical sessions are delivered in University Hospital Crosshouse (20 minutes by car from Hairmyres) and University Hospital Ayr (34 miles and 40 minutes by car from Hairmyres)The emphasis will be on building a strong team structure to support all aspects of the regional vascular service. Due to the volume of both elective and emergency work currently done by both units, it is expected that the post holders will have ample opportunity to develop vascular surgical and endovascular skills and indeed previous post holders have gone on to secure substantive consultant positions.Applicants should hold full GMC registration with a license to practice and have at least four years full time post postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis). At least two of which will be in a specialty training program in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
