Job Description

Senior Electrical Designer Permanent, Full-time Devonport, Plymouth Based SF33125 Overall Department Direction Babcock International are looking to recruit a Senior Electrical Designer to join our Energy & Marine Division. Our core skills include Naval Architecture, Systems Engineering, multi-discipline design support and project management for new build and in-service commercial and defence vessels. Our state-of-the-art facilities offer world-class efficiency, scale and quality and our customers include: governments, international shipyards and ship owners and energy majors. Reporting to the Principal Designer, you will work within a team of Electrical Designers who support numerous and varied projects. With a diverse product portfolio, we offer an exciting opportunity to join an ever-growing business with longevity. Projects include; design packages to support submarine and surface ship refits for the Royal Navy as well as International Commercial and Naval contracts. The Department offers a friendly, flexible working environment, with further opportunities for development and progression within the Company. Main Purpose of Role As a senior designer, you will act as the main focal point for checking technical outputs, within discipline, in accordance with company and regulatory standards. You will advise and assist in selecting the correct methods and tools for tasks, provide technical assistance to designers and trainee designers within the team and contribute to the preparation/production of design outputs across the design lifecycle in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements. Key Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Allocate discipline tasks to allocated team of Designers, check team drawing outputs, and ensure inter discipline coordination in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Advise and assist in selecting the correct methods and tools for tasks and provide technical assistance to allocated team of Designers.
  • Contribute to the preparation/production of drawings in support of basic, detail and production design in line with recognised ISO standards and to the required; time, cost and quality requirements.
  • Provide point of contact with professional engineering colleagues and various stakeholders for discipline related issues during design lifecycle, contribute to design reviews and ensure coordination and functionality of design
  • Assist in the resolution of Production & Technical Queries & development of discipline solutions for the team in relation to manufacturing & installation issues
  • Contribute to learning from experience (LfE) requirement, during and post project
  • Develop innovative design solutions, and fulfil Design Lead responsibilities as assigned for multi discipline low risk projects
  • What do I need to do the role Qualifications Youll need to hold a minimum of a HNC/HND (or BTEC Level 4) in a relevant engineering subject or an applicable higher education qualification along with suitable experience and a sound knowledge of platform systems and design processes. Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences To undertake this role, you need to:
  • Have demonstrable experience in a design environment.
  • Possess good CAD skills, written and verbal communication skills and a good understanding of technical risk management.
  • Have a sound understanding of electrical design and installation processes.
  • Develop close working relationships within the wider technical community including other design, safety and engineering teams as well as Project, System and Platform Technical Authorities.

Grade This position is within the Energy & Marine business unit as a Grade 5 which has a starting salary of £36,525 - £45,045 with DRDL Terms and Conditions.
