Applications are invited for a Research Software Engineer (Designing Future Wheat) to join the Laboratory of Dr Robert Davey in the Digital Biology Programme at the Earlham Institute, based in Norwich, UK.About the Earlham Institute:Earlham Institute (EI) is a vibrant research institute focused on developing, understanding and using state-of-the-art genomics and bioinformatics to advance and enable bioscience by applying computational and data driven approaches.EI is located with five other partners on the Norwich Research Park, a bioscience cluster with an outstanding reputation in plant and microbial sciences, interdisciplinary environmental sciences, and food, diet and health. The role:We are recruiting a Research Software Engineer to join the Designing Future Wheat (DFW) project. DFW is the UK national wheat programme, funded by the UKRI BBSRC, and brings together key research and breeding institutions to deliver wheat crop improvementsthrough trait selection, germplasm toolkits, and data platforms. This final area is the main focus of this role - the successful candidate will join the Data Access and Analysis work package team, led by Rob Davey at EI and co-led by Chris Rawlings at RothamstedResearch, developing central data management systems for robust and scalable FAIR data practices throughout the project. The successful candidate will work with another Research Software Engineer in the group to develop the Grassroots data service platform. Grassroots currently serves the community with over 30TB of wheat data, and is the primary data store for DFWs field trialsacross the project, as well as hosting bioinformatics services, and digital repositories for publications and associated datasets. This role will be an exciting opportunity for those who wish to use their programming skills to develop interoperable open source software to facilitate effective data sharing for the UK wheat research community. This will involve developing and maintainingweb-based frontends for data ingestion, validation and visualisation, as well as data intensive backend services for processing, management, and analysis.EI is a fantastic environment to learn new skills and technologies, and for those who wish to share their skills with others we actively promote our staff to be involved with our training programmes to deliver useful courses to the community through ourAdvanced Training services. The ideal candidate:The ideal candidate will have a MSc and/or PhD in a relevant discipline, e.g., computer science, bioinformatics. The role will require experience in Linux, Python, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Bootstrap, with experience in Django as desirable. The successfulapplicant will have a track record in data management, preferably in the field of agriculture and crop genomics, or non-biomedical life science data as well as strong experience in software development, with a focus on data handling and infrastructure developmentAdditional information:Salary on appointment will be within the range £40,785 to £49,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.
