Job Description

Applicants invited for posts of Locum Consultant in the Acute Medical Unite (AMU) at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH).These posts are a mix of replacement and service cover posts, bridging the gap until the substantive appointments can be made. Ideally 10PA posts but the department is open to discussions around less than full time working or flexible working arrangements. This is an excellent opportunity to join the team of dedicated Consultants, Training Doctors, Physician Associates, Advanced Care Practitioners and Nursing staff working in our Acute Medical Units. Together, we are determined to become even better at providing a truly excellent service within Norfolk, we want you to be part of this.Although Norfolk can be considered by some, a quiet part of the country, the Acute Medical Unit is one of the busiest single hospital units in the country. The hospital serves a large catchment population of over 700,000, swollen in the summer months by many holidaymakers visiting our beautiful county. We see over 200 patients per month, of which about 20% are in an ambulatory setting. This takes place on the NNUH site in close co-operation with the Emergency Department, the Critical Care Complex, Coronary Care Unit, Medical Specialties and Primary Care. The ethos of “Team Working” is fundamental to the Department and the appointee must be an excellent innovator, leader and team player. We aim to have consultants taking direct calls from our community partners to enable management of as many cases as possible via ambulatory or other outpatient settings. The Hospital is investing heavily in expanding its established Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) model which already runs 7 days/week. Our ethos is that all patients seen in AEC are “ambulatory until proven otherwise”. As a consequence, we are growing Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) models and need your expertise to help us develop a portfolio of pathways.Patients admitted to the AMU are seen by the dedicated team of juniors and reviewed by the middle grades +/- consultant and then triaged to either remain under AMU short stay (if likely to go home within 48 hours) or to one of the specialities we work closely with. Patients are referred directly to specialties such as cardiology, respiratory, endocrinology, nephrology, older peoples’ medicine, gastroenterology, neurology, haematology and oncology.Because we have such strong ties with our specialties, we may be able to offer flexible job plans. For committed and appropriate appointees, including opportunities to develop or maintain skills in other specialties as required, such as Cardiology (echocardiography and Heart Failure), Gastroenterology (with training in Upper and Lower GI endoscopy), Stroke Medicine, Rheumatology, Diabetes or Endocrinology. It is an exciting time to join our unit as we continue to grow and improve, come and find out more, visit or give us a call! The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is located on the periphery of the cathedral city of Norwich, which has a rich character and charm. Norwich is a UNESCO City of Literature, one of only 11 cities in the world to be bestowed this status. It is surrounded by beautiful villages, unspoilt East Anglian countryside, the Norfolk Broads and beautiful beaches. There are excellent schools in and around the Norwich area and good transport links to Cambridge and London. There is now dual carriageway all the way from Norwich to London, which has significantly improved travelling times into and out of Norfolk. Norwich also benefits from an International Airport with frequent flights to UK destinations as well as several flights per day to Amsterdam Schipol airport. For informal enquiries please contact Dr Didi Musa, Service Director for Acute Medicine, on , Duduzile.Musa@nnuh.nhs.uk.To learn more about the Trust please visit our website. We welcome all applications irrespective of age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race or religion.
