Job Description

Age International is the international arm of Age UK, the UK member of the HelpAge global network and a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). Our role is to advocate, increase awareness and raise funds for programmes from the UK public, theUK Government and grant-making institutions to change the future for older people across the world.Age International supports older people and fights ageism around the world. Right now, millions of older people are struggling to get by, their needs and human rights are being overlooked. We work to change futures and attitudes, because every person, regardlessof age, has the right to live a dignified life.Its an exciting time to join a small but mighty Policy and Influencing team at Age International. We have a refreshed strategy and a strong track record of influencing UK Government policy on issues affecting older people in low and middle-income countries.This new Policy Adviser - Humanitarian & Global Health role is a great opportunity to achieve meaningful change for older people by collaborating with colleagues across the organisation working in parliamentary affairs, programmes, communicationsand campaigns.Within the role, youll help Age International influence UK-based humanitarian and global health policy stakeholders to ensure that the rights and needs of older people are taken into account in the UKs humanitarian and global health work. Youll keep abreastof what is happening in the sector, bring together research and evidence into compelling briefs and reports, seek out opportunities where we can have greatest influence and impact, and build relationships with stakeholders including politicians, civil servants,researchers and think-tanks, and other NGOs in our sector.Were looking for someone who can bring strong experience of working on humanitarian policy and global health policy, with a collaborative way of working. Youll need to be passionate about social change, bringing together an ability to translate complexmaterial into compelling narratives, an ability to identify strategic opportunities and an eye for detail.We offer hybrid working from our offices in the City of London with occasional travel to events or internationally.Must haves:

  • Experience of carrying out humanitarian and global health policy advocacy in the UK or internationally, including policy research, compiling evidence and analysis, engaging with stakeholders, and responding to calls for evidence and enquiries
  • Experience of engaging with external stakeholders at different levels within UK and global institutions, and across barriers of language, culture and power dynamics
  • Ability to comprehend and assimilate complex information at speed and quickly understand and handle new or unfamiliar subjects or concepts
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, and the ability to match tone and style to different audiences and occasions
  • Experience of translating complex data and evidence into engaging written content, including formulating policy recommendations
  • Ability to represent Age International to senior-level decision-makers
  • Ability to operative effectively on your own initiative and as a member of a team
  • Ability to build effective working relationships internally and externally, to consult, negotiate and build support for initiatives across teams and with partner organisations, balancing collaborative working and listening skills with the ability to promoteAge Internationals agenda
  • Knowledge and understanding of global humanitarian and global health policy processes, standards, codes and stakeholders and an understanding of the impact of climate change on humanitarian and health needs
Great to haves:
  • Knowledge of international development, including an understanding of national and multilateral institutions and policy processes
  • Knowledge of population ageing and the views, needs and aspirations of older people in lower and middle-income countries
  • Existing and previous relationships and contacts with global humanitarian and global health policy stakeholders
  • Understanding of gender equality issues and other sector trends, such as localisation
