Job Description

Your new companyYou will be joining a world leading research institute based in the Cambridge area.The institution has invested heavily in equipment and lab upgrades and fosters a highly collaborative and friendly work environment, where you will be working with leading experts within cancer and biological research.They also offer very generous benefits, a flexible approach to working and make significant investment into the training and development of their staff, so there will be a number of opportunities to develop new and advance existing skills.Your new roleThis is a permanent position, supporting a number of labs within a core research facility that deal with both biological samples and radioactive chemicals.As well as leading a small team and supporting lab operations, youll be the lead person for biological safety and radiation protection.Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide guidance on the use and disposal of biological and radioactive materials
  • Carry out training and support researchers on the safe handling of biological and radioactive materials, eg on risk assessments for GMMs / GMOs
  • Carry out quality checks and inspections of equipment
  • Liaise with researchers and outside contractors on equipment servicing and calibration
  • Ensure compliance with the relevant regulations and standards for biological and radioactive materials
  • Put together COSHH assessments and ensure these are kept up to date & readily accessible
  • Work closely with scientific researchers on new processes, materials and procedures to ensure theyve been properly assessed and SOPs are fit for purpose
This position can be offered at different levels and so could suit someone who is an existing manager or someone looking to step up into this position with training and support offered to help with this transition.What youll need to succeedYou should have:
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification/relevant experience in a scientific discipline, eg biology, physics, microbiology, chemistry, engineering, etc
  • A track record of managing multiple concurrent projects / issues
  • Extensive experience in working with biological (especially GMM / GMO) and radioactive materials, preferably in a research or laboratory environment
  • Strong communication skills, ideally with a background of providing training
  • The ability to work with a diverse group of internal stakeholders and external contractors
