Innovation OfficerLocation: Cambridge, United KingdomSalary: CompetitiveHours of Work: Full TimeAbout the Innovation Officer Role:The Innovation Officer role offers the opportunity to join the Intellectual Property team of a cutting-edge biotech company that has a focus on innovation and offers a wide portfolio of biotech products and services.The Innovation Officer works closely with members of all Business Units, legal and R&D teams to evaluate intellectual property (IP) matters, evaluate technology disclosures and support business development, research operations and in- and out-licensing activities.The ideal candidate will be dynamic, motivated to learn, efficient, outcome-driven, and will thrive in a fast-paced, environment.Innovation Officer Responsibilities:

  • Assist in evaluating scientific discoveries
  • Assist in assessing intellectual property matters (E.g. patentability and freedom to operate), in relation to new technologies, and products and technologies under development
  • Searching patent databases and scientific literature for relevant prior art and freedom to operate information
  • Assist in processing and interpreting legal agreements such as Licence agreements, Collaborative Research Agreements, MTAs, commercialisation agreements, CDAs/NDAs to support Legal, IP and Commercial teams, in the context of research and commercial activities of the business
  • drafting decision support documents for internal IP Committee decision meetings
  • Assist in structuring deals including license agreements, R&D partnerships and collaborations with external entities
  • Collating and curating scientific, contractual and IP information to feed into databases
  • Innovation Officer Requirements:
  • Life science degree, PhD or equivalent experience, preferably in the areas of molecular biology, immunology and cell therapy
  • Experience working in industry or in a corporate environment
  • Experience in commercialisation of R&D outcomes, IP protection and management, and/or life-science-based business development
  • Experience searching patent databases
  • Good understanding of intellectual property protection processes and procedures
  • Ability to understand and interpret patent specifications
  • Ability to understand commercial agreements and licences
  • Ability to analyse a range of complex information and identify the key elements and issues
  • High level communication skills including the ability to assimilate, comprehend and communicate a range of technical and commercial information to different audiences
  • Ability to work effectively across teams including R&D, legal, sales, marketing and finance teams
  • Attention to detail
  • Desirable:
  • IP education experience to help enhance skills of research teams to identify, protect and manage intellectual property
  • Understanding of the UK grant funding system
  • Experience of project management of industry-academic projects
  • Experience with development and implementation of business plans and commercialisation of R&D in an innovation environment
  • Experience extracting, collating and curating information to build databases
  • Technology evaluation and/or deal negotiation in the IP space, a plus
