  • Provide leadership on a shift-by-shift basis, demonstrating expert knowledge and advice to all members of the multidisciplinary team promoting alternatives to ED including streaming to the UTC and other alternatives.
  • Respect individual customs, values, culture and spiritual beliefs of the patient and their family/carers and maintain patient confidentiality in line with trust policy.
  • Evaluate and monitor standards of care to ensure that these are achieved. Provide support and guidance to facilitate the improvement of performance where standards are not achieved.
  • Promote and maintain standards of professional practice to enhance the quality of care for patients, carers and relatives.
  • Work closely with the ED leadership team to monitor patient satisfaction and deal with complaints in a proactive way, using the clinical governance framework to highlight learning opportunities. Investigate patient and relative complaints promptly, cultivatingan environment of customer awareness among staff
  • Work closely with the matrons, other Senior Staff, Emergency Physicians, Acute Care Physicians, and other Emergency Specialty consultants as part of a cohesive team to develop and promote a multi-professional approach to the care of all patients withinthe specialty, developing and maintaining standards of care.
  • Provide bronze level management for a Major or other incident.
  • Promote the specialty of emergency care within the Trust and contribute to the development of emergency care.
  • Provide expert specialist advice and guidance to other professionals and agencies about alternatives to ED and admission.
  • Maintain communication networks at all appropriate clinical and managerial levels, providing highly complex and sensitive information and routine corporate matters.
  • Facilitate expedient and effective patient care through a productive working relationship with nursing, medical, management and ancillary staff within the Trust and external agencies.
  • Ensure patient activity and waiting time targets are met for each patient, streaming patients on clinical priority, with consideration to national targets. Escalate to wider Trust if circumstances are compromising the Units ability to achieve these.
  • Carry out regular risk assessments in line with Trust policy, identifying risks presented by those patients who have mental health problems or exhibit violent or aggressive behaviour due to substance misuse. Provide support and guidance to staff memberswho are affected by these circumstances and ensure all incidents are reported in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • To have a sound working knowledge of the hospitals plans for managing large scale emergencies including trauma, epidemic illness, chemical, biological, radiation and nuclear (CBRN) contamination and be prepared to initiate the Major Incident Plan withinthe department.
Managerial and leadership
  • Contribute to the directorate and corporate agenda by participating as a full member of the service team including service planning, strategic development, and budget management. Lead on areas of project work and implement effective change to support deliveryof ED access standards and alternative pathways.
  • Work in conjunction with matrons and Operations Managers to develop a sustainable model for streaming to the UTC to ensure that pathways are maximised on a consistent basis.
  • Work closely with the patient flow navigators to support escalation within and outside of the ED to ensure all patients are seen in a timely manner and in line with internal professional standards, communicating in complex and pressurised circumstancesand that will often involve conflict.
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and retention of competently skilled staff to meet the clinical service needs of the specialty.
  • Foster a creative and open working culture to encourage new ideas and new ways of working.
  • Within the defined service area, contribute to the consideration, development and implementation of new roles and ways of working.
  • On a shift basis line manage patient flow navigators
