Job Description

Assistant Electrician Meyer Scott Ref: VR/08659Salary: £21,630 - £24,285 per annumLocation: CambridgeType: PermanentThe Estates Division at the University of Cambridge is a multi-disciplinary organisation responsible for the development, management, and maintenance of the University estate, along with the provision of a variety of related services. Our current operationalestate (buildings used for teaching, research and administrative activities) is currently valued at £3 billion (Insurance Replacement Cost) and its broad and complex nature presents many demanding challenges, for example some buildings are 800 years old, GradeI Listed and protected by English Heritage, whilst others are new with highly sustainable building fabrics and buildings management systems.Purpose of the roleThe role holder will provide electrical services, as part of the Maintenance team to the University estate, responding to requests for repairs and carrying out electrical installations, tests and inspections. You will receive and manage electronic work orderson mobile handheld device, updating information to keep supervisor and departments informed.Support to Team Leaders

  • You will attend site in support of Team Leader - Electrical Engineering Services and/or Maintenance Electrician to investigate reported operational problems on services plant, or to carry out routine maintenance and in assessing problem, diagnosing faults,test running the plant if necessary. Helps to inspect/service plant in accordance with Maintenance Sections/manufacturers instructions and orders parts from Purchasing and Supplies team.
Installation work including Tests and Inspections
  • Assist in assessing installation requirements on site determining materials, other trade skills required, builders work and anticipated time schedule.
  • Liaise with Departmental/Building personnel in respect to the nature of the installation and the effect of the work on Departmental operations.
  • Fix equipment into position, installing cabling and cable containment systems.
  • Move and erect all necessary access equipment to carry out the installation, such as ladders and scaffold towers.
  • On completion of practical installation assists in carrying out Test and Inspection of installation as detailed in the current edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations. Assists in completion of relevant certification including all inspection observations andrecorded test values.
  • Carries out commissioning works required to put installation into correct/safe working operation.
The role holder will carry out housekeeping duties as required to ensure that M&E workshops are kept in a safe and tidy conditions.Other Duties:
  • As part of response repairs and installation work, obtain correct parts and materials from the Purchasing & Supplies team and provide correct Work Order information on an authorised requisition form.
  • Carry out all necessary risk assessments prior to carrying out work or driving University Vehicles
  • Reports to supervisor if any difficulties are encountered when carrying out tasks, including H&S risk.
What our client is looking for:
  • You will have NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation or equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Experience of test and inspection and certification of electrical systems in accordance with Wiring Regulations.
  • Experience of M&E workshop environments.
  • H&S Risk Assessments.
  • Demonstrable practical experience of the installation of electrical services.
Skills
  • Can follow technical instructions.
  • Good IT skills including MS Office, internet and email and use of mobile technology.
  • Installation of electrical equipment and services in operational buildings.
Additional Requirements
  • Knowledge of the safe use of access equipment including scaffolding and hydraulic platforms.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of power and hand tools.
Car Parking: The parking is FREE. It is about a 7-minute walk. It is secure parking with a barrier and CCTV.Hours: Monday - Friday 36.5 hours per week.
