Job Description

RoleReporting into the Head of Commercial for the Port of Blyth, the Business Development Managers key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Drive profitable growth for Transped.
  • Play a key role in helping to develop a Deep sea feeder service.
  • Focus on expanding services offered to existing customers based on the Port, offering a 1 stop shop for container, freight forwarding and packing services.
  • Expand the customer base across a variety of sectors, including paper, tissue and packaging goods, which currently forms a large proportion of trade.
  • Work closely with the Operations Manager, dealing with issues and working closely together to solve the problem.
  • Customer focused, retaining and growing existing customer accounts whilst also seeking new business.
  • Support the development of accurate, relevant and profitable tenders and quotations.
  • Solution focused, able to understand customer requirements and provide relevant, commercially viable solutions.
  • End to End commercial involvement including working with and sourcing hauliers.

Established in 1882 it is one of the UKs largest Trust Ports,contributing significantly to trade in the North East of England and supporting thousands of jobs in the region.With particular expertise in the offshore energy, project cargo, container, dry bulk and break bulk sectors, Port of Blyth is Northumberlands international gateway and a leading UK offshore energy support base.Following a fantastic year, which saw turnovergrow by 15% reaching a 140-year high of £25.5m and profits increase by two thirds to £2.1m the Port has been shortlisted for the coveted Company of the Year title in the Northumberland and Tyneside section.TranspedTransped is the international logistics division of Blyth Harbour Commission based in Port of Blyth but operating globally,a wholly owned subsidiary of the Port, Transped offer a full logistics, storage and forwarding service to clientsthis includes ashort sea container service provided through a twice weekly container service from Holland. Additional services include import/export packing, warehousing, distribution and storage as well as worldwide forwarding.2021 was a record year for Transped, achieving the highest volume of containers shipped in its history , an exciting opportunity now exists for an experienced business development manager to join this successful Port and drive future growth for Transped.Experience
  • Relevant logistics sector experience is essential, need to hit the ground running, ideal candidates would come with short sea experience perhaps from a freight forwarder, unitised container or 3pl company.
  • Must have previous sales experience in a solution, fast paced environment. Good mix of account management / long term relationship and new business development skills with the ability to develop strategic relationships with key customers.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability and drive to spot new opportunities and take ownership in moving them forward.
  • Confident to report into the board, presenting opportunities for growth and development of Transped services.
  • Excellent communication skills, consistently working to deliver excellent customer experience.
  • Inquisitive and technically aware with strong commercial acumenattention to detail around quotations, able to get into the detail and ask customer the right questions to ensure service can be delivered at a price that maintains margin.
  • Must be hands on and understand the service orientated, value added culture and mindset of the Port. Thinking as 1 team, getting involved in operational and commercial issues and being a real team player.
  • A charismatic and inspiring personality with the ability to gain credibility quickly with peers, reports and the leadership team.
  • Need to be based within commutable distance of Blyth and open to travel across the UK and Europe to visit customers when required.
