Job Description

  • We are currently looking for a qualified and experienced SEN Teacher to join this good-outstanding SEN School in Barking. The school caters for students aged 2-19 with Visual Impairment (VI), Multi-Sensory Impairments (MSI) and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD).This SEN school is located only a short distance from Barking station and within a short walk from the highstreet and a number of bus stops, making it easily accessible by public transport. The SEN school has benefited from new leadership who have improved standards from Requires Improvement (2015) to being observed by Ofsted this year as Good-outstanding. Leadership at the school are determined to ensure that the school becomes outstanding in all areas.The RoleYou would be leading an MSI primary class of up to 8 students with the aid of at least 2 TAs. The successful SEN Teacher would need to be able to plan and deliver lessons differentiated to meet the needs of individual students. Children at this level would be working at P levels 1-8.Due to the needs of the children, the curriculum would focus on communication, social relationships and emotional development, conceptual development and sensory responses. Students achievement is measured regularly against 3 profiles, with emphasis on individual progress and not specific grades.The CandidateAs an SEN Teacher, you would be using a range of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems including Makaton Signing, On Body Signing, Coactive Signing, PODD Communication Books, PECS and a number of hi-tech voice output technologies (GoTalks, iPads, Proxtalker). Experience in working with these communication aids would be advantageous however the school provides an intensive induction programme to all new staff.In addition to this regular in-house training, the school has provided many teaching staff with continuous professional development (CPD) opportunities and prospects of completing a post graduate qualification in VI or MSI.You must have excellent communication and team work skills as you would be required to work with support staff, therapists, parents and carers.
