Job Description

About the role We, Physical and Sensory Support (PSS) at Surrey County Council, are looking to recruit to the role of Advisory Teacher for Vision Impairment. We currently have two opportunities available:

  • 1 x 18 hours per week
  • 1 x 28.80 hours per week
  • You will be able to indicate your preference in your application.We are a body of professionals within the Equality and Well-being Service (in Education) under the Vulnerable Learners team within the directorate for Children, Families, Life-long Learning and Culture.We work with children and students from 0-25 (and beyond) with sensory impairment i.e. multisensory impairment (MSI), hearing impairment (HI), vision impairment (VI) and/or physical disability (PD) and/or who use assistive technology (AT) and devices for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).Team:We are made up of: Specialist Teachers, Specialist Teaching Assistants, a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist for AAC, Student Support Workers, Specialist HI Technicians for Audiology, a Specialist VI Technician, BSL Interpreters, a Deaf Instructor and an Administration Team underpinning the work we do.Goal/purpose:Our work on behalf of Surrey County Council and directed at children and students with SI and/or PD and/or who use AAC/AT is to facilitate this vulnerable cohorts full inclusion and participation in all learning experiences (evidenced by improved progress and attainment) so that they become socially skilled, emotionally resilient and active members of their communities.Role:As an Advisory Teacher for vision impairment you will be working as part of the Equality and Wellbeing Service, PSS (Home and School, 0 to 18). You will be a key member of this multi-professional team, delivering a service, centred on the Expanded Core Curriculum, to children/students with VI from 0 to 18, their families and their education settings. A significant number of these children/students are registered sight impaired/severely sight impaired and are or will be braillists.To be considered for short-listing, your application, in the first instance, will need to evidence your experience of working as a Teacher:
  • with QTS (qualified teacher status) or with QTLS (qualified teacher learning and skills)
  • with children / students with special educational needs and disability
  • who is keen to work with children/students with VI or who has experience of working with children/students with VI
  • who is keen to learn braille from the outset in order to teach it/who has completed a braille course in order to teach it
  • who enjoys working in and with a team and is open to other peoples ideas
