Summary General Manager, Quarry Bank and Nether Alderley Mill Salary Circa £52,221 Permanent contractA General Manager role in the National Trust is both challenging and rewarding, and youll operate with a significant degree of autonomy. What its like to work here Quarry Bank is one of Britains greatest industrial heritage sites, situated just outside Manchester. Visitors can step back in time, exploring the contrasting working and domestic lives of the mill masters and mill workers. Its an exciting time to workat Quarry Bank, as the property has completed a £10m Lottery-funded visitor experience project.Nether Alderley Mill is a beautiful mediaeval flour mill, a hidden gem of a property which is open during the summer months and still produces flour, using restored wooden milling machinery. What youll be doing You will have a plan for the future, in line with the national and regional strategy. Youll be part of a successful wider GM team across The North, and youll work with our internal Consultancy and external partners to achieve our goals and champion theNational Trusts causal message. Youll manage a Property Leadership team made up of a number of Heads of Department, each with their own specialism. Youll need to bring a positive, empowering attitude to the team, which includes over 100 staff and nearly500 volunteers. Your inspirational style will motivate them to deliver outstanding results across all areas of the property. Who were looking for Youll be working with your team to create an inclusive culture, and a warm welcome, for our staff, volunteers, visitors and partners. Youll need to come up with ways to attract new visitors and repeat visits. The beautiful estate at Quarry Bank offersthe opportunity to deliver against the National Trusts Land and Nature targets. Youll be confident managing people, projects and money. Youll need to know when to delegate, and when to take ownership. Everything you do will be aligned with our valuesand ambitions, but it will also make perfect commercial and financial sense.Youll need to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Similar sized leadership experience ideally gained in the heritage or leisure sectoror evidence that you can adapt .
  • Youll be highly visible to your staff and volunteers, and able to share your vision in a clear and compelling way
  • Youll be a natural motivator and coach with an ability to set high standards and stretching targets, helping your Heads of Department achieve their full potential
  • Youll be adept at planning and prioritising, and the sort of person who can keep a cool head while balancing the urgent with the important
  • Youll turn strategy into operational reality: with an understanding of what makes a great visitor experience
  • Youll need to be a confident communicator and natural collaborator, adept at building effective working relationships with a wide variety of colleagues, neighbours and partners
  • You will be comfortable managing operational risk, understand the underpinning need for compliance and know what it means to hold others to account
  • Experience of managing projects would be an advantage.
