Job Description

Summary Do you have a proven track record of helping to ensure the preservation and presentation of collections, sharing your work with visitors and bringing the history of collections to life, then please read on.Proposed interview date: 26th April What its like to work here Quarry Bank is one of Britains most complete industrial heritage sites, situated just outside Manchester. Today, visitors can step back in time and explore the Mill, Apprentice House, Quarry Bank House and a Workers Cottage as well as stroll through thehistoric gardens, woodland and Styal village, following in the footsteps of the mill workers and mill owners. Quarry Bank is also home to a nationally significant archive and a diverse collection which are at the heart of everything we do here.Nether Alderley Mill is a recently restored flour mill. We care for this hidden gem too, telling the story of flour milling using traditional methods, which has taken place on site for hundreds of years.Were a dynamic and friendly team of 115 full and part time staff and nearly 500 volunteers working together across both properties to share unique and varied stories. We look after our sites with passion and commitment, making sure that we welcome and includeeveryone who wants to visit, work and volunteer here.Click here for more information about this location What youll be doing Youll be responsible for the daily opening of the houses (Apprentice House, Quarry Bank House, Workers Cottage) and no two days will be the same. Working with a small team of Collections Assistants, youll supervise the team and be responsible for implementingconservation routines, preventive conservation and the annual deep cleaning programme within the houses and stores to ensure excellent standards of care are met, delivering strategies to improve conservation.Youll collect and record information during housekeeping cleaning routines to inform our understanding of the houses and the collection, and use preventive conservation techniques to improve how we conserve and present the property. Youll also supportour plans to make the collections more accessible and will support with supervising a small team of volunteers working on specific projects.Youll enjoy telling visitors about our fascinating history, sharing tales from the past as well as your personal experience of working here.Please note that this role works across two rotas on the property. It is part of the Collections & House team rota working one in four weekends. Youll also fill in for the Collections Assistants at least one day a week and when covering holidays. It is also part of the Muster Point rota as part of the propertys emergency plan and works on a five-week rotation. Where possible the two rotas work together, but please note there may be additional weekend work due to this. Who were looking for

  • Knowledge of customer care and approaches to optimising visitor enjoyment.
  • Good team player with day to day line management and supervisory skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills enabling relationships to be maintained.
  • Some knowledge and experience of managing costs and expenditure.
  • Willing to contribute original or imaginative ways to make elements of the collection or house that are difficult to reach accessible to all visitors.
