Job Description

BAE Systems Land UK design and manufacture a wide range of munitions products. It is essential that our products are high quality and totally conform to the customers requirements. In this role - Metallurgy and NDT you will conduct testing processes using recognised non-destructive (ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection, eddy current testing, dye penetrant testing) and destructive (mechanical testing, metallography, hardness testing) techniques. You will be involved in all aspects of the business including assessment and validation of manufactured and purchased components, process control e.g. heat treatment, material selection and failure investigation. This role is wide-ranging and has both practical and theoretical elements. As part of your development to a certified practitioner you will be expected to carry out actual testing as well as completing theoretical and academic study. Verification of your understanding in the various elements will be assessed by formal practical and written examination. We will help you develop into a Metallurgical and Non-destructive test technologist that delivers safe, capable processes for optimised manufacture to specified standards. What you will be doing... (Role Duties and Responsibilities)Responsibilities include but are not solely limited to the below for both current and new manufactured and bought-in products.

  • Delivery of NDT and metallurgy related projects.
  • Preparation of NDT procedures and techniques and material specifications.
  • "Hands on" non-destructive testing of munitions component parts.
  • Involvement in the development and installation of future NDT processes to meet the requirements of the business and the customer.
  • Assisting with awareness training and knowledge improvement for all operators of current automated NDT processes.
  • Ensuring effective liaison with the other functions such as Manufacturing Engineering, Safety, Quality, Procurement and Logistics is used to successfully tackle production issues.
  • Sourcing of, and subsequent liaison with, specialist laboratory and test house facilities as required for test and validation purposes.
  • Contributing to technical appraisals, 8D investigation and other elevant technical reports and ensuring their approval and issue.
  • Contributing to metallurgical investigations of failures.
  • Supporting improvement projects in respect of technical issues.
  • Successful training and examination to attain, for example, PCN (Personnel Certification in Non-destructive Testing) requirements to Level 1 or Level 2 where applicable.

  • To ensure the provision and management of a Safe System of Work (SSOW) for NDT and metallurgy related processes.
  • Witnessing NDT and metallurgy related activities on and off site.
  • Quality
  • To provide the accurate and reliable delivery of NDT assessments.
  • To achieve PCN level 2 qualification in up to four techniques including (but not restricted to) ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection, eddy current testing and dye penetrant inspection.
  • To deliver accurate and reliable NDT and metallurgical reports.
  • Cost
  • To deliver projects to budget.
  • To ensure the provision and authorisation of the identification, justification, planning and project management of capital expenditure following the relevant BMS and PIE process, creating Technical Requirement Specifications.
  • Delivery
  • Support the day-to-day manufacture of Washington products and the delivery of the Washington Manufacturing Schedule target of >96%, taking responsibility for the delivery of the process.
  • Improve scrap rates and product delivery through an "issue, cause, remedial action and corrective action" approach to reducing NDT failure rates.
  • People
  • To ensure a positive, motivational and Continuous Improvement attitude to work.
  • To ensure the effective management of contractors in accordance with the BMS.
  • As a Metallurgy and NDT Engineer you may also be asked to fulfil additional roles to support the smooth running of the team. You will be advised of these roles and responsibilities separately and provided additional detail outlining these roles. Entry Requirements and what we are looking forTo apply, youll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 Bachelors degree in Materials Science or engineering based qualification preferably related to metals and metal products.
