Job Description

The Blood Sciences Specimen Reception department is seeking a motivated and practical individual to join our team.This is a rotational position working across the two Blood Sciences Laboratory Reception departments of The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.The vacancy is based upon a 37.5-hour working week, with 7.5-hour shifts between the hours of 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends & bank holidays. The primary shift, worked approximately 2 out of 3 weeks, will be 12:00 to 20:00. The other shift will be 09:00 – 17:00. There is also a week of 14:00 to 22:00 shifts on a rotational basis, approximately 1 week in 6. The successful applicant will also be required to participate on the weekend and bank holiday roster.Applicants wishing to work part-time, Monday – Friday, during the hours 16:00 – 22:00 will also be considered. However, as above, there will be a requirement to participate on the weekend & bank holiday roster.As the successful candidate, you will be required to undertake a period of training of approximately two months to complete. During this time you will be required to work between the hours of 09:00am and 17:00.As the successful applicant, you must be reliable, trustworthy and be able to work to tight deadlines under pressure. You will be a team worker as well as able to work alone. A solid, basic level of education is required that demonstrates a good understanding of the English language and numeracy.Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential and a level of computer literacy will be useful as a large proportion of the duty will include inputting patient information onto the iLab Laboratory computer system. An ability to follow instructions, work under pressure and demonstrate good manual dexterity will be an advantage.Successful applicants will need to be able to follow standard operating procedures to undertake other laboratory duties as described in the job description which includes the reception and sorting of laboratory specimens and their distribution to the appropriate departments. Along with basic operation of analytical equipment, the GLP sample track system and centrifuges.The right candidate will have an interest in biological sciences and in working within a large team of healthcare scientists. Experience in a blood sciences laboratory or closely related discipline would be advantageous, but is not essential; more important is your ability to work well with staff at all levels, contribute effectively to a team and deliver accurate work. It must be stressed that whilst every effort is made to encourage staff to progress, this particular role is not intended as an IBMS training role for graduate Biomedical Scientists.
