You willneed to have strong experience in relevant development tools and technologies as well as experience supporting and mentoring more junior developers.Our engineers work with a wide range of technologies, software tools and systems across multiple business areas with languages includingC#, Java, Python, Angular and Javascript.We deploy our solutions to cloud-based architectures as wellas to our own infrastructure and utilise technologies such asAzure, Terraform, AWS, Kubernetes, SQL. Everything we do is team based.Quality is paramount. Collaboration is key and you and your team will be supported to do good work. Mostcodeis done in pairs or largergroups to ensure quality and spread knowledge. Everyone reviews code and everyone welcomes feedback.We offer a great work / life balance. We have also welcomed people returning to their chosen career after a career break.Job descriptionThe senior software engineer is responsible for designing, coding, testing, deploying, improving and supporting applications and services.This will be within an agile development team which could primarily be working on new products and features, support of existing systems, or a combination of both.As a senior engineer you will support and mentor more junior members of the team to help build capability.The UK Hydrographic Office is a leading centre for hydrography, providing marine geospatial data to inform maritime decisions. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development aroundthe UK and worldwide.Person specificationAs a Senior Software Engineer you can expect to be involved in the following:

  • Attend relevant project related meetings (daily stand-up, sprint planning, review, retrospective etc)
  • Pair programming to deliver quality code solutions to customer requirements
  • Working with stakeholders to refine requirements and ensure they are fully understood and complete
  • Bug fixing and configuration of systems to support operation of live services
  • Active participation in wider software engineering community activities such as guilds, study groups etc and identifying and sharing best practices and recommendations for tools and techniques
  • Supporting and mentoring more junior colleagues to grow the teams capabilities
  • Continually develop your own skills as part of a programme of continuous professional development
