Job Description

Do you enjoy working within a team and helping young people to achieveWe are supporting an Outstanding Special Needs School in Surbiton in their search for enthusiastic Special Needs assistants. The school supports children aged 4 to 19 years old and caters for those with complex learning difficulties including autism andother sensory impairments, some children have challenging behaviours.The team you will be coming into are hardworking, dedicated and highly skilled, they like to provide a warm, safe and welcoming school where children can express themselves creatively.The roles are available to start in after Easter, and would be either on a 12-week temp to perm basis, or on ongoing a permanent basis - working Monday to Friday 8:30 to 16:00Your main duties will include:

  • Offer support for students before, during and after lessons
  • Assist students to understand and participate in set tasks
  • Be flexible to work with whole class groups, small groups or individual learners
  • Help promote each students love of learning
  • Join team meetings and training programmes as an active member of a team
  • Follow regulations pertaining to safeguarding
  • Where required, supporting individual needs including assisting with a wide range of medical and occasionally personal care tasks as necessary and providing physical support where needed (training will be provided in giving medical care and support)
  • inspiring and engaging with children with a range of additional learning needs
  • working on a 1:1 to or group basis to support learning
  • preparing materials, equipment and lessons
  • assisting with the personal care needs of pupils; this may include feeding, changing and manual handling
  • liaising with parents, carers and professionals such as teachers, education welfare officers, social workers and Healthcare professionals
The suitable candidate will have:
  • An undergraduate degree, and/or prior experience working alongside pupils with SEND
  • Good general education levels in English and Maths
  • Knowledge, keen interest or understanding of the range of different types of learning difficulties and disabilities (SEMH, ASC, challenging behaviour)
  • Ability to adapt to a various working environments and students with differing abilities
  • Practical approach to the needs of students with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities
  • Good interpersonal and communication skill and a caring attitude
  • Flexibility in terms of working patterns
