Job Description

Summary We’re seeking a Chartered Building Consultant - a Surveyor, Architect or Architectural Technologist - with an understanding of conservation and an up-to-date approach to the care of historic buildings - to join the team at Dyffryn House and Gardens. One of the last great country houses to be built in Wales, Dyffryn was designed by Newport Architect E.A. Lansdowne, constructed in 1893 and is now Grade II* listed by Cadw - the gardens are listed Grade I.You’ll face fascinating conservation challenges, and there’ll be exciting opportunities to drive forward further improvements to the Mansion – a statement building, drawing on English Baroque and the great Renaissance Chateaux of France - with a dash of Tudor magnificence thrown in.Added to which, you’ll work on our vernacular in hand buildings and on our visitor infrastructure.The chance to make a difference on this scale doesn’t come along every day.You’ll be based at the property office at Dyffryn, St. Nicholas, Vale of Glamorgan, nr Cardiff, CF5 6FZ, but will travel across property portfolios throughout South Wales.Salary range £32,304-£41,239 dependent on qualifications and experience. What youll be doing You’ll bring your technical expertise to the conservation and maintenance of Dyffryn, advising the property team undertaking capital project works, working with the Senior Building Surveyor for South Wales.You’ll focus on the delivery of projects ranging from Reactive work, Cyclical maintenance and Compliance works as well as the Conservation backlog.We’ll be upgrading power, data and sewage systems – surveying an underground Victorian Water tank, considering its potential capability to act as a rain water harvesting tank - as well as making thermal improvements in line with our strict Energy reduction programme.Visitor infrastructure remodelling and extension projects are in our sights, as are changes to our staff and volunteer facilities. Work is scheduled on a new propagation display glasshouse, walled garden repairs, bothy improvements - and on irrigation and water feature improvements utilising rain water harvesting and borehole extraction.These operations and projects underpin the Property’s ambition for the highest environmental credentials and the whole Trust’s target of being carbon net zero by 2030.Please also read the full role profile, attached to the end of this advert. Who were looking for To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • MRICS or equivalent membership e.g. MCIOB, RIBA, MCIAT.
  • A passion for building surveying within a heritage and conservation organisation.
  • Knowledge of building conservation – both practical and philosophical, from asset management to contract management, procurement, to maintenance and repair.
  • Experience of delivering projects in a multi-disciplinary environment including the preparation of specifications and drawings.
  • Experience of managing a cyclical maintenance budget.
  • Experience of working with a Facilities Team.
  • A clear client focus and excellent client relationship management skills.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • The ability to work and effectively manage your time autonomously whilst maintaining communications with the wider Wales Buildings Team.
  • To be able to make frequent visits to properties across Wales which are often not served by public transport
