Job Description

We do thisthrough celebrating and protecting differences by removing barriers and promoting equity and equality of opportunity for all.Summary:The post holder will join the Noise and Public Health team within the Environmental Hazards and Emergencies Department, where they will work on UKHSAs noise programme in support of national and local government to respond to, and reduce the burden of ill-healthattributable to noise. The post holder will:

  • Develop, review and communicate the evidence base on the mortality and morbidity effects associated with noise exposure. This includes the evidence on interventions aimed at reducing exposure, improving soundscapes and providing ancillary public healthbenefits.
  • Manage the delivery of the noise work programme together with the Noise and Public Health group leader,
  • Develop the noise programme, working in collaboration with internal and external partners and stakeholders, including other government departments, academia, industry and professional bodies.
  • Manage research and externally commissioned projects on noise and health as required and in collaboration with other UKHSA departments/groups.
  • Oversee the building of capacity and training, both internally and externally, for developing and disseminating the evidence base for reducing the health impacts of noise exposure.
  • Support the group leader for Noise and Public Health and where necessary deputising for them.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and knowledge dissemination to support awareness raising and capacity building.
  • Line-manage scientists and co-ordinate the work of small teams of scientists within UKHSA.
  • Support other UKHSA teams with their projects and collaborations relating to environmental public health.
Location:UKHSA offers hybrid working for its employeesthis means that whilst the role will be based in one of our UKHSA offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with theline manager, determined primarily by business need and in line with departmental policy.Some business travel will be required to other UKHSA offices. Business travel between base location and any other UKHSA offices will be covered under the UKHSA Travel and Expenses policy. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.Relocation expenses are not available.Job DescriptionKey Responsibilities:The main duty is to manage, support and, where agreed, lead on the delivery of key tasks including:
  • Management and development of UKHSAs Noise and Public Health programme, jointly with the Noise and Public Health group leader.
  • Full line management duties for a number (up to 5) of scientific, advisory and other staff including recruitment, training and supervision, appraisal, involvement in group-level business planning
  • Deputise for the Noise and Public Health group leader as necessary.
Advisory and Research Development tasks
  • At this level the post holder will lead on a variety of R&D projects and equivalent advisory projects. This includes main responsibility for:
    • Initiating research or health protection projects to support the noise and public health programme
    • Writing proposals, securing internal approval and presenting them to funding bodies
    • Planning projects in complex environments, complexity being manifest by the range of stakeholders involved/influenced and/or range of projects planned and undertaken by the postholder
    • Developing and implementing detailed research/advisory protocols
    • Leading research teams
    • Carrying out research studies/advisory projects and supervising the work of others
    • Working with research collaborators/partners from other organisations including international collaboration
Knowledge mobilisation
  • Trusted source of specialist expert advice on noise and health, representing UKHSA at scientific committees at national and international level
  • Authoring scientific reports and blogs, including material in plain English for the UKHSA website
  • Drafting advice documents and working as secretary for scientific committees (e.g. advisory committees). These documents may have significant implications within UKHSA or for partner organisations
  • Contribute to the production of advice/standards by international advisory bodies (e.g. WHO agencies, ISO) in their area of specialist expertise
  • Giving presentations on scientific and advisory projects to large audiences at local, national and international conferences. This may include presentations to or significant advice to the public
  • Dissemination of information and knowledge gathered from participation at workshops, meetings, seminars and conferences to colleagues
Training
  • Provide training on environmental issues associated with area of expertise in support of EHED training courses, in particular;
    • Deliver formal lectures on scheduled courses.
    • Contribute to professional level training courses, provided to senior environmental public health professionals.
    • Review any training materials and provide critical review in order to improve training outcomes.
    • Develop and train other UKHSA staff
