Job Description

Wellcome is a politically and financially independent global charitable foundation, funded by a £29.1 billion investment portfolio. We support discovery and translational research into life, health and wellbeing, and were taking on three worldwide healthchallenges: Mental Health, Climate & Health and Infectious Diseases.These challenges need the bold science we support, but they wont be solved by science alone and because it will take more than science alone to solve these health challenges, we need peoplewho can work with policy, culture, governments, industry and the research community.The Intellectual Property and Translation team sits within Wellcomes Legal department and handles a wide range of IP, contract and grant related queries. In particular, wesupport the Wellcome Collection (our museum, library and gallery space) with IP matters relating to its exhibitions, the digitisation of its archive material and other content creation, as well as advising our Research Funding and our Open Access teams inrelation to the IP aspects of our grant conditions and research funding policies.We are looking for Associate Legal Counsel to do a maternity cover c.12 month. This role provides high quality commercial intellectual property ("IP") and legal advice to Wellcomeacross its wide-ranging research funding and other charitable activities.In this role you will Work closely with Wellcomes Research Programmes team and act as an IP expert for the wider organisation, including: Drafting and reviewing legal documents (primarilynew grant funding agreements and PRIs for translational projects) and providing IP advice to colleagues across Wellcome. Providing advice as required when new issues arise under current and historic research funding agreements, including compliance with Wellcomepolicies, consents to commercialise IP, revenue and equity sharing and loan conversions. Working with the relevant teams across Wellcome on IP related matters, principally copyright (but also some trade marks) and issues relating to the application of WellcomesIP related grant conditions and our policies on IP and revenue and equity sharing. Developing an understanding of risk/benefit issues relevant to Wellcome and taking this into account in relation to business and legal advice provided to the organisation. Assistingin the development of template legal documents. Research and horizon-scanning into legal areas relevant to Wellcomes activities and supporting presentations and training within the Legal team and to the wider organisation. Assisting and supporting more seniormembers of the Legal team on cross Wellcome strategic projects and other projects, where required. Assisting with the management of the teams systems and processes, including a knowledge-sharing platform, agreements database, surveys and intranet pages. Tobe successful in this role you will have Experience of working in-house or private practice; Experience of drafting and negotiating commercial IP contracts. Good working knowledge of copyright law and basic knowledge (at least) of trademark law and applyingfor new marks Excellent drafting, research and analysis skills and Excellent attention to detail. Strong project management and organisational skills. Strong written and oral communication skills. Qualified as a UK solicitor with existing PQE mark.
