Summary The National Trust cares for over 56,000 pieces of furniture, one of the largest and most significant collections of furniture in the world. The prime strength of the collections lies in English furniture, but there are also outstanding European and Asianpieces, and a full range of types, from practical domestic objects through to the finest examples of the cabinet-makers art. It is a world-class collection, associated with over 200 major historic houses, reflecting the individual histories of owners, makers,patrons and collectors and also the wider panorama of Britains history at home and abroad.This is a fantastic development opportunity for someone with a solid foundation in furniture conservation and structural treatments. As the Trusts first remedial conservator focussing on furniture in 127 years your role will develop treatments and explorethe materials and techniques used in the making of furniture.This is not a traditional conservation space where work is mostly undertaken behind closed doors. The team of conservators deliver treatments in a studio that is open to the public and we actively engage visitors in our cause for conservation, so pleasenote that some weekend working will be required. What its like to work here The Conservation Studio is set within a magnificent and recently restored 15th century ragstone barn, which is a fabulous mix of contemporary and historical architecture. The barn is in the grounds of Knole and whilst working on National Trust collectionsyou will experience a commanding view of the deer park and house.The open plan studio is perfect for multi-disciplinary teamwork, where specialists share their skills and expertise to deliver conservation treatments on National Trust collections. Youll work with colleagues across the Trust, including conservators basedin the regions, curators, volunteers, property teams, marketing and engagement specialists. What youll be doing Most of your time will be spent at the studio undertaking remedial conservation work on furniture. On occasion you will work at other National Trust properties, which may require overnight stays, activities will include remedial conservation, surveys andestimates.Collaborating with curators and analytical specialists your work will contribute to the identification of materials and techniques. Through the dissemination of your work and the Studios unique public engagement objectives, you will support a strong visitorprogramme focussing on the best of the National Trust.
