Job Description

Are you a Science Technician with parenting/caring commitments Or do you simply want to work to live, rather than live to workWould you like to work term-time, 4 days a week, or do the school run every dayAre you looking for a permanent role in the Salford (MediaCity) areaWorking for an employer who invests in training and developmentIf so, this could be the ideal role for you.I am working with Aldridge Education to find a Permanent Science Technician to join their team at UTC@MediaCityUK.This role is just 26 hours a week, and you can tweak the hours to suit you.Aldridge Education have a great reputation as an employer who invests in training and development.UTC@MediaCityUK is an exciting school to work in as they offer a specialist digital education to pupils aged 14-19.You will support two experienced science teachers in setting up all practical science lessons. Training will be provided, and you will benefit from the trusts excellent development programme, "Growing Together".This role would suit a science graduate or college leaver with science A levels, or someone with recent lab experience.You will benefit from an exceptional local authority pension, a work schedule which fits around home commitments, and the opportunity to build a career in a growing organisation.Important Details:

Duties of the Science Technician:
  • Ensure science laboratories are maintained in line with Health and Safety requirements and organizing regular resting of equipment.
  • Preparation, maintenance, and safe storage of equipment for practical science lessons.
  • General maintenance of each laboratory including the care and maintenance of services, stores, equipment, drainage systems, working surfaces etc. reporting any repairs.
  • Maintain good cleanliness and tidiness throughout the laboratories.
  • Maintenance and ordering of stock to meet requirements, receipt and storage of new materials, including materials requiring special care e.g., toxic chemicals.
  • Maintaining stock and breakage records.
  • Constructing apparatus for demonstration or practical lesson.
  • Reduction of laboratory risks, first aid treatment in the laboratory in accordance with the school procedures.
  • Assisting in class with demonstrations of practical techniques and support where necessary in class activities.
  • Set up for practical exams as required by appropriate exam board.
  • Administrative tasks such as filing, data input, stock control, updating and photocopying as required.
  • Attend department meetings, college training and external training when required.
  • Ensure that all safeguarding policies and procedures are followed.
Experience and Qualifications of the Science Technician:
  • Qualified to A level standard or equivalent.
  • Grade C/ Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths and English.
  • Recent lab experience.
  • Experience of working as a member of a team in a busy environment.
  • Numerate and literate.
  • ICT literate.
  • Ability to relate well to young people and adults.
  • Initiative, resilience, and the ability to work unsupervised.
  • Willingness to take on challenges and resolve problems.
  • A proactive, positive attitude and flexible approach.
An Advantage but not Essential:
  • Qualification in laboratories skills (e.g BTEC).
  • Qualified in First Aid.
  • Experience of stock control.
  • Experience of managing within a laboratory setting.
  • Experience of managing, organising, and prioritising own workload.
  • Experience of working in an environment with young people.
  • Able to carry out standard laboratory procedures e.g making stock solutions, working with glass.
  • Maintenance of equipment e.g microscopes, power packs.
  • Familiar with KS3 and KS4 science curriculum.
  • Awareness and implementation of Health and Safety routines and regulations.
