Job Description

At the heart of Saint-Gobains strategy, the Insulation Activity develops products and systems for thermal and acoustic insulation, and fire protection in buildings, with occupants comfort and well-being, and environmental protection at the heart of its concerns.We have an exciting opportunity for 2 Development Scientists to join us at Saint-Gobain Insulation, based at either our Runcorn, hadliehg or Eggborough sites (travel between these sites will be required). You will be responsible for developing new products (including formulations), providing technical support to other functions (Operations, Purchasing, Marketing) and certifying current and new products within the Celotex (PIR, Polyisocyanurate) and Isover (Glass wool) brands for Saint-Gobain Insulation UK. Also, you will develop an in-depth understanding of product performance to improve current product offerings, working with internal and external research agencies. Liaising with external certification bodies and test laboratories about testing current and new products and obtaining approval is also an essential part of the role.Key responsibilities:

  • To be responsible for technically leading new product development projects, including working with suppliers, developing new formulations and processes both in the laboratory and on the production lines.
  • To work in a safe manner, looking to improve safety within the department.
  • To be responsible for leading manufacturing trials and subsequent testing of product and raw materials, and provide feedback to the team and suppliers.
  • To evaluate, develop and update material/product specifications with respect to changes within production arising from Development activities. To support the purchasing team to establish specifications for new chemicals.
  • To ensure that the relevant external testing and certification activities are completed as requested for new and existing products. To understand the relevant regulations and testing standards.
  • To develop new testing methodologies for evaluating and understanding product performance in current and new applications. To keep abreast of current advances in building insulation technologies.
  • To provide technical support to the manufacturing lines in solving problems (linking chemistry to formulation to product performance).
  • Use statistical tools to analyse data in your work.
  • Undertake any other duties as may be required by your Line Manager or the Executive team, consistent with the scope of the job.
  • To adhere to all SG Insulation UK and Saint-Gobain policies and procedures and ensure that you respect these with regard to, though not limited to, health and safety, the elimination of waste and care for the environment, equality of opportunity and the prevention of fraud.
  • To adhere to the company Quality Policy and Procedures and be proactive in reporting or raising issues of either non-compliance or areas for improvement in order to ensure complete customer satisfaction through:
  • compliance with the relevant Standards and Regulations.
  • improvement in products, solutions and services.
  • a quality system that is fit for purpose, continuously maintained and improved.
    • What were looking for in a Development Scientist:
  • Educated to degree level (preferably Masters) or above in science-based subject, preferably chemistry, chemical engineering or materials-science related discipline.
  • Great communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Computer literate
  • Proven problem solving skills with the ability to always link their work to the needs of the customer and the benefits to the business.
  • Experience in product development (at least 2-3 years), ideally in construction products or similar industry, with skills in physical and chemical testing as well as small-scale sample development.
  • Knowledge of working safely in a laboratory and continuous manufacturing environments
  • Someone who is willing to travel between SG Insulation Manufacturing sites
