Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLELiberty Speciality Steels currently have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Instrumentation Technician to join our team at Thrybergh Combination Mill, Rotherham. Thrybergh Combination Mill is a hot rolling steel mill and the process control function is responsible for ensuring process safety compliance by completing proof tests, maintaining instrumentation, process sensitive equipment and communication systems within the department.The ideal candidate will be electrically biased and have a good understanding of burner control, including PID loops, calibration and process instrumentation control, fault finding and repairs.Instrumentation Technicians are required to work in a professional manner, under a wide range of conditions on a day/shift basis as well as carrying out supervisory and administrative duties to ensure the smooth running of the department and it’s service to the business.The Instrumentation Technician is responsible for the health and safety of their self and others working for the Process Control department.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe Instrumentation Technician will undertake the following duties and responsibilities;

  • To ensure that plant, departmental personnel and contractors operate within and comply with both company policy and statutory Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
  • To undertake the maintenance and quality assurance procedures for the process control equipment and ensure compliance to all relevant procedures, legislation, standards, behaviours and performance targets.
  • Contribute to the team’s continuous improvement of plant and equipment, to identify and implement improvements.
  • To maintain asset availability and efficiency through planned and reactive maintenance activities, considering the company asset management framework (CAMF) / statutory responsibilities, plant histories, fault finding techniques, delay analysis and using own knowledge of process, and plant.
  • Support the development of Technicians, Graduates, and Apprentices to satisfy current and long-term Business objectives.
  • Participate and contribute toward investigations, including failure identification and root cause investigations to engineer out repeat failures.
  • Support the operations of the Process Control Department in order to achieve Business Plans, including the adherence of departmental budgets, to meet annual targets and agreed operating standards relating to costs.
  • REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Strong Drive, Motivation and Commitment: the extent to which the individual is self-starting and self-motivated and the degree and consistency of energy / enthusiasm which is committed in the pursuit of objectives and business goals.
  • The post holder should have good analytical skills and the ability to assimilate, organise and analyse pertinent information for logic-based problem solving.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Able to communicate in clear concise manner, both in writing and orally, communicating honestly, clearly and directly, making effective use of communication technology.
  • Computer literate with practical experience of a CMMS reporting system
  • A team worker, with a flexible approach to work.
  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Practitioner knowledge of process control and its application.
  • Qualified to HNC in electrical engineering with an electrical based apprenticeship.
  • Working knowledge of electrical safety, process safety, health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Awareness of quality management systems and external auditing requirements
  • The postholder must also demonstrate sound understanding and experience of the theory and practice of the following areas:-
  • Instrumentation and Control
  • Plant sensors, thermocouples, transducers and detectors
  • PLC and PC systems and languages
  • Closed circuit television systems
  • NDT and destructive testing inspection techniques and applications
  • Communications systems, RF and land based, voice, data and control
  • Weighing systems
  • Testing of atmospheres in confined spaces
  • Energy, fuels, utilities management and combustion of fuels
  • Quality standards and how to adhere to procedures for auditing purposes.
  • Process control, Process systems, and networks.
  • Process Safety
  • Awareness of Process Hazards Analysis Methodologies, Hazard and Operability study (HAZOP)
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Safety Instrumented System quantitative analysis
  • Risk Analysis and Assessment Methodologies
