Senior Naval Architect - StructuralBased from Bristol, Plymouth or Rosyth£40,841 - £53,385 dependent on experience and locationSF 33031Overall Department DirectionEnergy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.The Division is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme as well as providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Also, with ongoing additional framework agreements, infrastructure projects, export markets and research & development projects. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK. We are recruiting staff in all disciplines, to join us at Bristol, Devonport or Rosyth with flexible working arrangements and UK travel to meet project requirements.Main Purpose of RoleThe role is within our current shipbuilding programme, with other shipbuilding and refit opportunities in the pipeline. The role is for a structural Naval Architect (or equivalent discipline), initially to join a seatings team, which will include:• Structural analysis of major and minor seats.• Producing analysis and substantiation reports for structural installations, seatings and modifications to the required time, cost and quality requirements.• Use of Finite Element Analysis software and 2D and 3D CAD software• Checking of design calculations and supporting drawings ensuring quality of outputs.• Liaising with detail design teams, production teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of the design.• Presenting design solutions at design reviews and supporting interfaces with internal and external customers.• Developing innovative design solutions that meet functional, manufacturing and installation requirements• Resolution of technical and production queries• Ensuring procedures, codes and standards are correctly identified and applied to engineering and technical activities• Being aware of health, safety and environmental requirementsIn addition you will belong to the overall E&M Marine Structures team and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and CompetencesThe Senior Engineer is required to have a high level of developed knowledge, the role is directly accountable for design development, and determines solutions to problems and issues within their specialist subject area.Provides help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working, and their development. Although not essential, defence related design experience would be an advantageQualifications• Ideally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered;• Ideally you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS etc.) and hold Chartered or Incorporated status (or be working towards);• Either already UK Security cleared or able for achieve UK SC clearanceAbout Babcock InternationalFor more than a century, Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence company, has been trusted to deliver bespoke, highly-skilled engineering services.
