Job Description

Role: Senior Design Engineer - Mechanical SystemsLocation: Devonport Royal Dockyard - Plymouth PL2 2BGDuration: 31/12/2023 (6 Months)Rate: £70 p/hourIR35 Status: Inside IR35The purpose of the Senior Design Engineer - Mechanical Systems:To be responsible for the provision of technical engineering and design support/deliverables to the various Plant/Project Managers and Design & Safety Managers covering nuclear and non-nuclear mechanical and pipework systems for facilities within the POSTHOLDERs area of responsibility. To ensure deliverables are to recognised national and client standards, minimising business risk and meeting the requirements of all relevant contracts, statutory legislation, external regulatory bodies and classification societies.Principal Tasks & Responsibilities Are (More Can Be Provided on Request):

  • Lead and manage a team of engineers, planning and organising their tasks and facilitating progress, providing guidance as appropriate.
  • Develop design solutions to meet customers requirements and in accordance with relevant nuclear, technical, safety guidance and statutory legislation.
  • Act as lead author for design and safety documentation and manage the production of supporting assessments.
  • Ensure that design documentation covers the full design life cycle of the equipment / facility in accordance with the appropriate Agility design and safety process.
  • Ensuring that environmental and conventional Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statutory regulation requirements are embodied into the engineering systems.
  • Lead the provision of quality documentation checking services with reference to technical speciality/expertise.
  • Lead the provision of advice to Principal Engineers and other key stakeholders on the implementation and maintenance of design documents and compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations
  • Manage specialist contracted and sub-contracted design assessments and documentation.
  • Provide technical advice/recommendations (including LfE) on the viability and continuous improvement of:
  • New mechanical cross site (Systems) services; Modifications to existing mechanical cross site services; New/existing business processes and procedures.
  • Undertake site visits to support TA / design activities, witness critical commissioning activities when required.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
  • Relevant Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Level 6 qualification, or lower with demonstrable experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to post and project requirements.
  • Sound project specification, planning project management and budgeting experience
  • Sound understanding of company and departmental procedures relating to health and safety, design and quality.
  • Sound understanding of Industry legislation (PESR, PSSR, PUWER, CDM, DSEAR etc.)
  • Sound understanding of Industry Codes & Standards (BS, ISO, ASME, ASTM, API etc.).
  • Sound understanding of Design Engineering Practices (Steam & Condensate, HVAC, Fresh, Sea and Demineralised Water, Industrial Gases, pipelines, pressure systems and other mechanical building services systems).
Nuclear
  • NUC0793 Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1 or equivalent.
  • NUC0794 Nuclear Fundamental Course Module 2 or equivalent.
  • Radiation Awareness Training.
Skills
  • ILM Level 3 in Developing Management and Leadership or equivalent.
  • Mentoring and/or coaching skills.
  • Good team player with good communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Methodical thinker with good problem-solving skills
  • Editorial and briefing skills.
  • Clear spoken and written English. Numerate and computer literate.
  • Drive and enthusiasm.
