Principal Designer - GA/Key PlansBased from Bristol, Plymouth or Rosyth£40,841 - £53,385 dependent on experience and locationSF 33032Overall Department DirectionEnergy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.The Division is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme as well as providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. Also, with ongoing additional framework agreements, infrastructure projects, export markets and research & development projects. Therefore, we are looking to grow our existing team, building on a well-established foundation of over 700 staff across the UK. We are recruiting staff in all disciplines, to join us at Bristol, Devonport or Rosyth with flexible working arrangements and UK travel to meet project requirements.Main Purpose of RoleThe role is within our current shipbuilding programme, with other shipbuilding and refit opportunities in the pipeline. The role is for a Principal Designer to act as compartment and Key Plan owner on a current project, to include:-• Compartment Owner for accommodation and accommodation service spaces including galley and laundry• Key plan owner - ability to manage the version update of multiple Key plans including the General Arrangement• Management of approval through QA process of Key Plans, including holding forums and reviews to gain wide stakeholder approval.• AutoCAD expert and lead the arrangement team in drafting standards and methodologies to achieve maximum efficiencies.• Developed special awareness, to solve difficult physical integration issues.• Demonstrable experience in managing Key plans of ship programmes.• Management of configuration of Key Plans• Being aware of health, safety and environmental requirementsIn addition you will belong to the overall E&M design team and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and CompetencesThe Principal Designer requires excellent knowledge of CAD, written and verbal communications, depth of specialist knowledge and experience related to a multi disciple subject areas. Diagnoses & resolves complex design issues spanning multiple systems/disciplines, provides specialist technical advice and guidance to others, provides technical design leadership. Accountable for delivery of fit for purpose designs consistent with design brief.Although not essential, defence related design experience would be an advantageQualifications• An HNC/HND (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering subject or significant experience in technical leading of a design team, with breadth and depth of knowledge of platform arrangements, systems and design processes.• Typically Incorporated Engineer status or working toward.• Either already UK Security cleared or able for achieve UK SC clearanceAbout Babcock InternationalFor more than a century, Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence company, has been trusted to deliver bespoke, highly-skilled engineering services.
