Job Description

SRUC is unique in Scotland and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. Our ambitious and exciting vision is to work at local, national and international levels, leading innovation and sustainable development in agriculture and rural sectors.We are currently seeking applications for this exciting role to join the team based at Pentlands Science Park, Roslin, Midlothian. The main purpose of this role is to provide an effective, reliable and efficient clinical pathology diagnostic service to veterinary surgeons in practice throughout UK. Key components of this work include the interpretation of results in relation to the clinical history, providing reports and liaising with clients as required. Duties will involve both farm animal and companion animal submissions.Duties and responsibilities include:

  • To liaise with colleagues in post-mortem centres, hubs and species sector groups to become fully familiar with farming systems, diseases and differential diagnoses in order to provide meaningful interpretation of laboratory results. The role involves working with colleagues across the whole SRUC Veterinary Services group with the emphasis on team-work and co-operation
  • Working within a team of veterinary pathologists, to read cytology smears from all sample types, with support from colleagues for second opinions and case consultations
  • To gain a full understanding of the laboratory tests including analytical methods, test limitations and their performance within our ISO17025 quality system
  • To develop a good working relationship with veterinary practice clients to encourage submissions and provide top quality client support
  • To investigate in detail unusual cases of farm animal disease in collaboration with veterinary colleagues within SRUC and other specialist institutions
  • To demonstrate a quality-driven approach to their duties with participation in management of Capital Diagnostic’s external quality assurance scheme (CQAS)
  • To consider opportunities for new tests and services including new product developments in conjunction with the senior scientists, subject to business case approval
  • To be self-motivated to develop in the role, acquiring specialist knowledge of one or more scientific areas applicable to furthering the expertise and standing of SRUC staff in the wider veterinary and scientific community
  • To undertake research and develop initiatives with colleagues in SRUC and other institutions, contributing to the advisory, development and research effort of other departments within SRUC as required
  • To participate in SRUC’s educational programmes relating to animal health
  • To contribute as required to SRUC’s farmer education and awareness campaigns to promote animal welfare. To participate in disease eradication and control programme being directed by the State Veterinary Service by providing full supporting laboratory services as and when required by the Scottish Government
  • To participate in weekend working duty rotas as required by SRUC (currently a Saturday morning rota one week in four)
  • In this role you may be required to work for periods at other SRUC Veterinary Centres as necessary and as directed by the Group Manager Veterinary Services.To be considered for this role, you should possess a veterinary degree and be a current member of MRCVS. Ideally you should have a specialist qualification related to veterinary clinical pathology.You should possess significant experience of large animal practice including a range of farm animal and companion animal species. You should have experience of clinical pathology, cytology, writing articles and doing oral presentations. This should combine with an excellent knowledge of farm animal health, management, disease control measures and diagnostic investigation including laboratory testing and interpretation.A driving licence is essential as travel to remote areas not covered by public transport may be required in this role.Further details on the requirements of this role can be found in the Job Particulars document which you must read before applying for this role.
