Applications are invited from enthusiastic and highly motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientists to work within Cellular Pathology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon Tyne. The department provides Histology, Cytology and Mortuary services. It is purpose-built within a prime city-centre location, offering an attractive career opportunity.The laboratory is one of the largest services in the country and handles around 80,000 histology requests and 5000 Non-Gynae Cytology requests per annum. We receive a broad range of specimens from within the Trust, General Practitioners and as a specialist referral centre, handle cases regionally, nationally and from overseas. We have a large scope of practice, with specialist sections in Specimen Reception dissection, Slide Production, Immunohistochemistry, Neuropathology, Muscle and Nerve, Electron Microscopy, Non-Gynae Cytology, Autopsy Pathology, Paediatric Pathology, Bio-banking and Research. We are also working towards supporting the Northern Genomic Laboratory Hub as regional Pathology centre, advancing in molecular techniques. We offer and feed into downstream genetic and molecular testing to compliment both histological diagnosis and research.The successful will be primarily based in the specimen reception/dissection area of the department, and will also have the opportunity to join the on-call service.We offer training opportunities across all staff grades and continue to develop in accordance with the professional vision of enhanced roles for Biomedical Scientists, who thrive on providing a high quality service within a well-equipped and modern working environment.Applicants must be able to demonstrate knowledge of Cellular Pathology and experience as a Specialist BMS. Candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to work on their own initiative as well as part of a team.
