Job Description

Summary We are looking for a Senior Building Surveyor with a strong knowledge of historic properties to become part of our team in the North. This is a rare and special opportunity to apply your professional skillset to some of the North’s iconic structures. Ourplaces are spread across the county, from wild coasts to wooded estates and Lakeland hills.This role will ideally be based in the Northeast of the North region, but we are willing to be flexible and would consider different locations/bases for the right candidate.We use a hybrid working model that mixes home, office and on site working. Expect to be onsite at properties across the North or in one of our offices – at Newcastle, York, Grasmere or Altrincham/Manchester at least 3 days a week. Due to the travel requiredin this role, you will need a full driving licence with access to your own vehicle.As Senior Building Surveyor, you’ll have line management responsibility for a Contracts Manager or Building Surveyor.This is a permanent role offering a salary in the region of £47,000. What its like to work here Your work will be integrated into our National Trust Consultancy which provides properties with advice and practical support across the full range of conservation and supporter development activities. You’ll bring to the team an in-depth conservation buildingknowledge, a high level of experience and the ability to work at pace in complex technical situations. What youll be doing You’ll be allocated a number of places that you will act as building surveyor lead for and while you will manage and support projects at these sites, we will also seek to match skillsets with the work needed, so this can mean involvement at other placesin the North region. You’ll work alongside other Building Surveyors and be supported by the wider building surveyor community in the North and nationally.Whether it’s Mansion houses, Castles, or aspects of civil infrastructure, you’ll be responsible for the provision of an excellent conservation building service, taking work from inception to delivery. Your work will be focussed on larger-scale planned maintenanceand on higher value project work for our in-hand estate (this can be conservation or compliance related). You’ll provide expert advice, and delivery of building work to the highest conservation standards. You’re likely to act as project manager, followingthe NT’s project governance framework and managing external advisers and contractors. You’ll contribute to project planning and lead building conservation condition assessments.Managing and building strong relationships with stakeholders is critical. Your internal clients are usually National Trust General Managers and Facilities Managers at local sites. You’ll be involved with other NT specialists, and statutory and local authorityofficers. You’ll be able to clearly communicate the essential elements of the work and collaborate on finding the best solutions. Who were looking for

  • full membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors/Chartered Institute of Building.
  • a good knowledge of professional building consultancy across complex portfolios, with knowledge of building conservation, defect diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.
  • a strong track record of planning and delivering a programme of works/project, with a value up to £500k.
  • an understanding of relevant legislation and best practice
  • knowledge of contract appointment and administration
  • experience of financial responsibility for projects and cyclical work
  • strong communication skills focused on the client’s needs and what’s needed to progress the work to schedule and standards.
