Job Description

The Role:Salary Banding: £41,904 to £45,873 (Band 10)Ours is an organisation with real purpose, and our police staff roles offer you the chance to be part of something that really matters.If youre a qualified accountant and youre looking for a role where your skills can really make a difference to more than just the bottom line, this could be the job for you.We are looking to recruit into a number of senior accountant roles to fill vacancies within the Finance Department. This is an exciting opportunity to join our existing team of finance professionals, gain knowledge and exposure to a wide range of financeand accountancy areas within a dynamic public sector organisation.As a senior accountant with Northumbria Police your role will involve providing relevant support and interaction with all areas of finance including statutory accounts preparation, financial systems, treasury management, internal and external audit, budgetsetting, financial performance and business partnering.You will provide professional accounting expertise to support the planning and management of the forces strategic financial plans. Itll be a fast-paced role, where youll prepare, monitor and close the annual capital and revenue budgets. This role offersyou the chance to deliver financial support and advice to a multi-force regional collaboration, accounting for joint operation arrangements as well as supporting the central finance function for Northumbria Police.The force has recently developed a more agile and smarter approach to service delivery, recognising there are a number of roles that can be performed effectively in the home environment, enabling greater productivity and improved work-life balance.This role has been assigned an agile persona which means that you will be able to work flexibly at a force location or at home. The assigned team zone location for the role is Forth Banks Police Station, Newcastle City Centre. Frequency of attendanceat the force location will be determined subject to business needs and in agreement with line management.What will I be doing

  • Provide support to the Finance Lead to ensure the delivery of a responsive, effective and accurate financial management service across the Force, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and identified partnerships.
  • Manage finance staff and teams to deliver accurate finance information, efficient financial services and provide guidance and support to senior managers across the organisation.
  • Support the timely and accurate preparation, monitoring and closure of the annual capital and revenue budget and the medium-term financial planning process.
  • Support the Finance Lead in the preparation of the Annual Statements of Account and Annual Governance Statements for the Chief Constable, Police & Crime Commissioner and Group in line with statutory deadlines, including the completion of Whole of GovernmentAccounts (WGA).
  • Support the Finance Lead in the delivery and management of the finance business plan.
  • Liaison with Heads of Department and reporting to Chief Officers as appropriate in order to support senior management decision-making.
  • Manage the delivery of the Force financial performance information, forecasts and reports to the Finance Lead and senior management, for both revenue and capital budgets.
  • Provide quality assurance to ensure the accuracy of financial information, engaging with stakeholders to ensure that budget projections are prudent, achievable and robust.
  • Provide advice to senior managers to support decision making and strategic planning.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and ensure compliance with Home Office and CIPFA Codes of Practice.
What do I needEssential
  • Hold a professional finance qualification - CCAB, CIMA or overseas equivalent.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of financial planning and budget management.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to plan effectively; to manage the delivery of assigned tasks and objectives, setting appropriate deadlines.
  • Technically competent in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience of using finance IT systems.
Desirable
  • Experience and knowledge of working within a public sector organisation.
  • Degree qualification or above.
  • Experience of managing a finance team.
Terms and ConditionsVetting Level - Management Vetting (MV) and Security Clearance (SC)Applicants must be a resident of the UK for a minimum period of 5 years to ensure vetting checks can be successfully performed.
