Your in depth understanding of Safety Engineering, (specifically around in Defence) could provide an immediate benefit to our top-tier defence client. As a Senior/Principal Safety Engineer, you will be supporting the delivery of a number of complex safetycritical and safety related systems across multiple platforms. Your experience around Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs), Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) will be welcomed, and your ability toundertake safety engineering activities by using guidance from Def Stan 00-056 and IEC61508 will prove valuable.You will have the opportunity to work for a leading engineering specialist who solves the toughest problems in space, aeronautics, defence, and cyberspace engineering to meet the ever-evolving needs of their customers worldwide. Along with strong technical competencies and capabilities, the role requires leadership and management skills to help in promoting Safety principles andvalues, and to better influence positive change across the business.Role Responsibilities

• Support & report to the Project Safety Manager responsible for safety cases.
• Undertake safety analysis activities as directed by the Project Safety Manager.
• Generate & document safety analysis subject to internal peer review & governance reviews.
• Generate safety requirements for the system to ensure that the customer’s safety targets, and derived safety targets can be met by the system design (e.g., random hardware failure probabilities or systematic safety integrity level (SIL) targets for softwareand/or firmware).
• Support the planning of safety activities on complex projects.
• Supporting audits at internal and external design reviews and safety committee meetings.
• Presenting internally, and to customers.
• Producing technical documentation in accordance with company/customer procedures.
• Travelling to customer and sub-contractor sites in the UK, occasionally overseas, as required.
• Undertaking analysis that positively impacts design decisions and solutions proposed by engineering teams.
• Presenting complex and reasoned safety arguments to internal and external stakeholders.
• Working collaboratively within multi-disciplined teams to generate high quality and well-reasoned outputs.
• Provide input to the monthly staff meetings, team briefings and SOFT reports.
• Supervision and development of other employees as required. Chance to act as a mentor to junior employees.

About youAs a Principal Safety Engineer, your background will include:

• Relevant work experience in a safety-related engineering environment.
• Understanding and awareness of international and defence standards such as IEC 61508 and Def Stan 00-056.
• Awareness of safety assurance of COTS PE based systems or high integrity software.
• Ability to understand hardware and software failure modes, causes and effects.
• Experience in some areas safety/reliability analysis techniques: hazard identification and analysis, FMECA, FTA, Functional Failure Analysis.
• Awareness of the tools and techniques used in Risk Assessments and developing ALARP justifications.
• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team (e.g. systems, hardware, software and ILS engineers, project management, customer and supplier engineering teams).
• Master’s degree, Degree, HND or HNC in Engineering or Safety Management related discipline.

Desirable experience

• Experience of Commercial or Military Maritime engineering Safety requirements capture, negotiation and trade—off.
• Knowledge of Human Factors Engineering.
• Knowledge of formal Validation and Verification processes.
• UK Defence experience on maritime projects.
• Knowledge of the full systems engineering lifecycle.
