Job Description

What its like to work here Working as the Collections and House Officer at Wallington offers the chance to care for an amazing collection. The mansion houses internationally recognised ceramics, a library that is one of the most significant in the National Trust, art works includingsocially, culturally and historically important pieces by William Bell Scott, Gainsborough, Turner and Burne-Jones, amongst others, as well as an out of the ordinary cabinet of curiosities. Click here for more information about this location What youll be doing As well as leading the team of two Collections Assistants to implement conservation routines, preventative conservation and cleaning programmes in the house, youll report to the SeniorCollections and House Officer. Working together youll ensure the collection is in safe hands and plan a program of visitor engagement, to share the work you do with the widest possible audience. Youll welcome everyone into the house, including those with accessibility issues, and bring to life the stories of the people connected to Wallington and the objects in your care. With around 75,000 visitors to the house each year, youll play an importantrole in balancing their experience and enjoyment with the safeguarding of the collection for future generations. Demonstrating this link between enjoyment and conservation through engagement will be high on your list of priorities.You will ensure the service team, including volunteers, are given up to date information and training in order to deliver a high-quality experience, encouraging the Collections Assistants and volunteers to involve and engage visitors, wherever possible,as they carry out their conservation work, bringing Wallington to life in front of the public. Although the house team itself is quite small you will be an integral part of a large property team that welcomes around 250,000 visitors annually. The wider estateis home to rare native species including red squirrels and white-clawed crayfish as well as other wildlife, plants and flowers.Youll collaborate with outdoor colleagues to understand the importance of the wider estate in connection to the house, and the links through generations of Wallingtons owners. This fascinating connection is something youll grow to understand and exploreas part of your work here. Who were looking for This a key representative role, so youll be part of the on-site housed team playing a major part in security and emergency response for the property. It is a full-time role and will involve a shared rota of weekends and on-call, out of hours, duty. Wallingtonis open all year and the house is currently open for around 39 weeks, 11.30am-3.30pm, 7 days a week.The perfect person will immerse themselves in the day to day running of the house, managing their team and supervising great service delivery, as well as seeking to ensure that this beautiful Northumberland country house is protected and safe whilst in theircare as a keyholder. We are looking for someone with a passion for trying new things to bring a new audience to the house as well as being mindful of our current supporters who know and love the treasures at Wallington, someone wholl spend time researchingbackground stories and history and be amazed and inspired by the potential in the Wallington archive that is theirs to bring to life for visitors.Working closely with the Senior Collections and House Officer to build a strong relationship, youll share thoughts, plans and ideas but also capably deliver agreed asks and objectives, being an advocate for their leadership across the property will ensureyou fit right in and start your journey with us on the right track.
