Job Description

Darjeeling Tours Ltd is a small UK-based tour operator which specialises in running package tours for railway enthusiasts, mainly to India. Our reputation and contacts are such that we are able to negotiate for special facilities to be provided for our tours which are usually not available to other tour operators.We require a General Manager to take over all aspects of the management of the company and running of the tours, reporting to the present Chairman, who wishes to retire from active work in the company. The duties will include:a) Overall management of all the company’s activitiesb) Developing and documenting all internal proceduresc) Staff management and recruitment, both full-time and casuald) Overseeing the marketing of the tours, with a view to increasing patronagee) Planning future tours, including agreeing with Indian Railways (and any other authorities) any special facilities required.f) Development of new revenue streams, including, but not restricted to, FIT’s and visa servicesg) Preparing and agreeing annual budgets, and producing regular comparisons between budget and actual performanceh) All aspects of tour management, including recruitment of suitable tour managersi) Ensuring that the company complies with UK law, specifically that relating to the operation of package tours including liaising with the Civil Aviation Authority to maintain the Company’s ATOL licenceThe particular skills we seek area) A strong background in tour industry managementb) Excellent contacts with Indian Railways at Board levelc) A good knowledge of India and surrounding countriesd) Good administrative skillse) Knowledge of the tourist railways and lesser-known branch railways in Indiaf) Knowledge of the railway enthusiast market in the UK.g) Good interpersonal skills to deal with both customers and suppliers.You MUST have at least one years management experience and one years experience as a General Manager and you MUST have a Bachelors degreeThe position will be based at our Mattersey office, near Doncaster but (just) in North Nottinghamshire.
