Job Description

About the Role SPIE UK have a fantastic opportunity available for a Graduate Mechanical Design Engineer to join our specialist team in Manchester! A competitive salary and excellent benefits will apply.This is a great opportunity for a graduate design engineer to influence SPIE designs and bring innovation and new efficiencies to the team. All ideas and concepts will be embraced by the team to determine the best solution for the client and sustainability.The Graduate Mechanical Design Engineer will report into the Design Manager to provide design activities to various SPIE EE MSS life sciences, Pharma R&D / manufacturing projects, research facilities and cleanroom suites. You will provide full project lifecyclecosting and design duties from concept design, estimating a solution for a client problem, to a designed and costed proposal, then developing the design to enable successful construction and handover within agreed budgets.This position will be offered as full time and permanent.Key Accountabilities

  • Be involved in the review and evaluation of the required building services systems to various types of facilities whether new build or refurbishments.
  • Reporting to the Mechanical Design Manager you will be provided briefs and given tasks that will feed into the design package of information.
  • You could receive initial verbal concepts and briefs, or you could be interpreting a written package of works and developing it into a detailed and coordinated work package proposal.
  • Explore new technologies, materials, and processes to bring innovation and sustainability to our designs.
  • Work with the operations team to assist with estimating, programming, and reporting.
Key Skills
  • The building services you will develop design skills for will include but not be limited to the following:
    1. HVAC and Psychrometric Relationships when applied to environmental control
    2. Ductwork and HVAC terminals
    3. Thermal losses and gains assessment
    4. Dehumidification function
    5. Public Health, WFI, RO, DI systems
    6. Steam and Condensate, LPHW, HPHW
    7. Chilled Water and the refrigeration cooling cycle
    8. Compressed Air
    9. Natural Gas Services
    10. Drainage systems
    11. Bracketry and fixings design selection
  • Engineering qualification to HNC level as a minimum.
  • Conversant with a wide range of mechanical and electrical building services systems and equipment.
  • Building Management Systems and associated principles.
  • IT literate with a technical understanding of IT packages relevant to the role, mainly Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD and EDSL Tas.
  • Experience of working in a controlled manner with existing systems but able to suggest and implement efficiencies.
  • Gain experience of designing within the Healthcare, Pharma and Food & Beverage sector.
  • Develop skills to specify instrumentation and BMS functions.
  • Learning how to coordinate a federated 3D model with data.
