Job Description

Control Systems and Electrics Development EngineerLowestoftFull Time - PermanentSalary DOEHales are excited to be recruiting for their client, a Marine Engineering company based in Lowestoft, for a Control Systems and Electrics Development Engineer.You will develop and test components, devices, systems, or equipment that use electricity as part of their source of power. You will be responsible for the Vessel Control System (VCS) and electrics solution is an integral part of the innovative PropulsionSystem that the company is developing.The Control Systems and Electrics Development Engineer will manage the VCS and electrics development, considering business, technology, and user experience requirements to ensure that we go to market with a product that supports the companies differentiationstrategy and brand, as well as being reliable, fit for purpose and profitable. This role will evolve to the development and management of telematics.Responsibilities:

  • Successfully lead the development of the VCS solution and ensure a production ready, reliable system is delivered and integrated into the outboard development programme.
  • Define product requirements considering the competitor landscape and target customer requirements.
  • Manage the business case and ensure the final product is the right balance of quality, functionality, and profitability.
  • Manage the VCS programme to budget in terms of development costs, prototype costs and production pricing.
  • Manage the development and validation timing to align with the overall outboard programme.
  • Drive decisions for the best possible end user experience (perceived quality, touch, feel and aesthetics).
  • Proactively manage selected development partners to carry out the engineering and validation activities to meet the targets set.
  • Work with other members of the business and key suppliers to develop and implement product interfaces.
  • Oversee the VCS product supply chain development to ensure all elements of the system are validated and ready for production.
  • Define the strategies for VCS and telematics delivery to ensure we go to market with a fully working, reliable solution that meets our end customer and business requirements.
  • Support the hands-on electrical activities in our operations at Lowestoft as and when required
  • Functional Safety process development and integration
  • Lead the electrics product development activity in-house and externally at suppliers / Engineering Service Providers
  • Specify and install appropriate electrics instrumentation based on test requirements.
  • Support Root Cause analysis of any Test Incidences, using a structured 8D process for problem resolution
  • Working closely with the Design Team to deliver targets.
  • Make sure all outboards successfully pass all Functional, Durability and Reliability testing and ensure that the Performance Targets from the Functional Requirements Document are achieved.
  • Keep abreast of technological developments and make recommendations to the business that impact the Product Route maps.
Previous Experience:
  • At least 5 years experience of developing electronic systems in an Engineering or Manufacturing environment,
  • Demonstrable experience of managing similar development programmes, including proactively managing external supplier resource.
  • Ideally experience of developing Marine Vessel Control Systems will be highly valued.
  • Ideally, experience of implementing telematics or Internet of Things (IoT) type solutions.
  • Proven delivery experience in electrical architectures, systems engineering, hardware and software
  • Previous experience in Functional Safety would be ideal
  • Ideally has also worked in a Small, Medium Enterprise (SME) and is able to demonstrate the ability to roll their sleeves up and personally get things done as part of a small team.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum Bachelors level degree in an Electronics / Mechatronics / Electromechanical Engineering discipline.
