Job Description

JOB TITLE: Technical Specialist in Cryptoasset Business Models (JR0012647)Location: London/Edinburgh/LeedsSalary: London up to £90,000 and National up to £82,000 per annumWhat you will be doingWe are looking for a talented individual with deep technical knowledge of cryptoassets, cryptoasset business models, and the risks posed by these models, to support our supervision of cryptoasset firms registered with the FCA under the Money Laundering Regulations.This is a role in the Registered & Complex Cases Team in Digital Assets Market Interventions (MIDA).The department is responsible for supervising Cryptoasset firms compliance with the Money Laundering Regulations (MLRs) and ensuring that firms maintain appropriately robust financial crime controls. The team is responsible for identifying, managing, andmitigating risks of potential harm arising in active and registered firms, including rapidly intervening where firms are at risk of being used as conduits for illegal activity, or pose harm to consumers or market integrity, for example perpetuating scams,fraud, or high-risk activities.The teams remit will change and broaden as the FCA assumes new regulatory responsibilities in relation to crypto, including taking on responsibilities in relation to consumer protection, conduct risk, and supporting development of a new regulatory regime.This is a fantastic opportunity to bring technical knowledge to bear on a high priority area for the FCA, and to play a key role in a fast-moving, highly innovative sector.The role will involve the following:

  • Providing specialist technical advice to FCA Supervisors on cryptoassets, cryptoasset business models, and the risks posed by these models
  • Providing specialist support to FCA Supervisors on developing and delivering supervisory strategies to mitigate harm and ensure cryptoasset firms compliance with the MLRs and - as appropriate - wider FCA rules and perimeters
  • Upskilling the wider department on cryptoassets and associated risks, financial crime typologies and drivers of harm
  • Leading and managing complex assessments, projects and research pieces involving cryptoasset firms
  • Promoting a diverse and inclusive culture, which embraces continuous improvement and developing individuals

  • The successful candidate will hold or will be required to obtain Security Clearance (SC) level vetting at a minimum. This requires at least two years of UK address history and other checks
  • Technical knowledge of cryptocurrencies (and the underlying technologies), cryptoasset business models, and the risks posed by these models
  • Experience of analysing cryptoasset business models and the characteristics of different cryptoassets to make risk-based judgements
Essential
  • Knowledge of the FCAs regulatory and wider legal framework in relation to cryptoassets
  • Proven experience of building and managing relationships with stakeholders at all levels, including senior management
  • Experience in developing effective supervisory strategies to mitigate complex money laundering, financial crime and conduct risks in the cryptoasset sector - applying technical and professional experience
  • An understanding of the systems, policies, and procedures that cryptoasset firms put in place to achieve compliance with the Money Laundering Regulations, financial promotions rules and wider FCA rules
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly in communicating complex and technical material in reports and communications to firms
  • Experience of leading and managing more junior colleagues and delivering through others
  • Experience of managing and delivering complex projects and workstreams
  • Ability to work under pressure, balancing competing important workstreams and deliverables
