Job Description

About ReprieveReprieve is a UK charity founded in 1999. Reprieve uses strategic interventions to end the use of the death penalty globally, and to end extreme human rights abuses carried out in the name of "counterterrorism" or "national security".Reprieve works with the most disenfranchised people in society, as it is in their cases that human rights are most swiftly jettisoned and the rule of law is cast aside. Thus, Reprieve promotes and protects the rights of those facing the death penalty and those who are the victims of extreme human rights abuses carried out in the name of "counterterrorism" or "national security", with a focus on arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial executions.About the Role:The Syria and Iraq Detention Project Caseworker is responsible for undertaking a range of casework activities in support of Reprieves work on detention cases in North East Syria (NES) and Iraq. There are currently thousands of people indefinitely detained in camps in North East Syria (NES), in conditions the UN has described as "deplorable and inhumane". Others have been transferred to Iraq or Assad-controlled Syria, where they have faced torture and the death penalty without anything resembling due process.Reprieves Syria and Iraq Project aim to ensure that individuals detained in Syria and Iraq are treated in line with international law, and not subjected to the death penalty, extrajudicial execution, arbitrary detention, torture or rendition. We also aim to challenge and change flawed war on terror narratives and legal and political frameworks - including in the UK, Europe and the US - that engender state-sanctioned discrimination and abuse and undermine the rule of law and human rights.About youYou will be responsible for undertaking the casework underpinning Reprieves dynamic strategic approach in which each of Reprieves methodologies-casework, investigation, litigation, political and public engagement, outreach and support for affected communities-connect with one another in pursuit of saving clients lives and addressing structural rights violations. You are an experienced caseworker with the skills necessary to address a complex portfolio of cases. You are a person with a high level of cultural competency, with direct lived or working experience with communities impacted by the so-called war on terror and/or the Syrian conflict. You are able to recognise nuance and show good judgement in working with clients and stakeholders. You are familiar with the political and legal context of detention issues in NES and Iraq, as well as with gender and trafficking issues. You are a positive person with a can-do attitude, 1-2 years of case management experience and advocacy experience, a great ability to multitask and excellent organisational skills, a sensitivity to the risks faced by those whom we work with and assist, and a willingness to muck in on all tasks big and small, humility and a passion for Reprieves work. You possess excellent research skills, and the ability to succinctly and clearly convey findings to inform the wider teams ability to advance strategic goals. You can draft advocacy and briefing materials for a wide range of audiences, tailoring your writing style accordingly. You will be an integral member of the Secret Prisons Team and larger Casework Team and will report to the Head of Syria and Iraq Detention Project.Length and SalaryThe role is a full-time, fixed term 12-month role with the possibility of extension (funding dependent) based in Reprieves London office during core office hours.
