Job Description

How to Apply - Please visit the Social Finance website to apply to this role. All applications should be registered via this means as we use the Be Applied platform portal to counteract unconscious bias in our hiring. We will shortlist candidates based on their answers to situational questions which aim to give us a sense of how you would approach the type of challenges we expect the successful candidate to take on. Most people find that answering those questions takes them about two hours.About Us - SF is an ambitious not for profit organisation, founded in 2007, which seeks to drive social change. We work in partnership with government, funders and the social sector to tackle entrenched social problems in the UK and Internationally. We seek transformation that is both sustainable & scalable and can harness investment where needed. What we do - We develop models, products and services that are pragmatic and have the scope to drive systemic change to improve people’s lives. In the UK, we focus on issues such as homelessness, domestic abuse, mental health, learning difficulties, loneliness, and vulnerable children on the edge of the care system. We also look to improve equity for marginalised communities in social services. Internationally, we design outcomes-based models for issues such as maternal and neonatal health, education, and employment. Our Values - Everyone at SF believes that change is possible. Our unique blend of skills and backgrounds enables us to create breakthrough solutions to society’s toughest problems. To help us do it, we have three core values that guide everything we do:

  • Pioneering Spirits - Be ambitious for lasting change and don’t stop until social systems truly meet people’s needs. Change is hard but by juggling social insight, business flair and practical savvy we make it happen
  • Curious Minds - Unearth the evidence, ask awkward questions and don’t give up until we get the right answer. Through rigorous thinking and learning from others we generate ideas that make a big social impact.
  • Respectful Hearts - Be all ears, see all angles - we seek to understand, not to blame. We embrace diverse backgrounds to build strong teams and create lasting partnerships for change.
  • The Opportunity - Your role will be to help us win work which changes lives. In your first six months you would expect a mix of:
  • Leading Bids - running the process, keeping the team excited (but organised!), reviewing text, and coaching non-specialists to understand how they write winning answers.
  • Writing Bids Yourself - ranging from a 5 page proposal for a small consultancy project, to a 100 page opus going into a major aid agency. We want someone hands-on, spending a couple of days a week writing themselves as well as coaching others and developing our approach.
  • Refining, Owning Our Bidding Process, & Training the Team to Use It - we have c.100 excellent staff, but few are experienced bid writers so we would like you to develop a SF approach which they can use in all bids, and to build the training program which enables them to learn it.
  • Designing Knowledge Management Infrastructure to Support Bidding - We don’t yet have a good database of past projects, of past responses (or scores), or frequently required datapoints. We know we need those and we would like you to help design our knowledge infrastructure. Other staff, including our CTO and our data and digital team, can help you.
  • About You - Ultimately, we’re more interested in what you can do then how you learned it. If you think you could do the role above then please apply! You don’t necessarily have to have held a Lead’ type role already - if you’ve got good bidding experience and are excited about helping others do it well, then you might be the perfect fit.We do need experience of bidding though and would expect most candidates to have at least three years’ experience of it. You will need to have experience of reviewing others’ bid text and coaching them to do better. You’ll also need to work across multiple projects simultaneously - juggling the short-term demands of bids with the longer-term demands of building systems, tools, and competencies.Desirable but not essential are experience of:
  • Bidding for contracts with local government, the NHS, Whitehall, major foundations, and international aid donors.
  • Creating bids for complex consultancy projects
  • Running bids in partnership with multiple partners or subcontractors
  • The policy domains we work in
  • Delivering consultancy services
  • Building knowledge management assets like databases of projects
  • Building up a team’s approach, and training others to use it well.
  • Our Commitment to You
  • Personal development is at the heart of the SF offer.
  • A competitive salary (dependant on experience and sector), a contributory stakeholder pension scheme, plus an uplift in salary allowance to spend on other benefits. We also offer season ticket loans, bike to work schemes and Give as you Earn via salary sacrifice.
  • Encouraging community and wellbeing and open to a range of flexible working options to support our people.
  • Should you require reasonable adjustments to allow you to attend an interview, please highlight this when you are invited.Closing date for applications: 1pm - Wednesday 26 May 2021 Required skills
