Job Description

Senior Network Engineer£70,000 - £90,000City of LondonInvestment Bank in the City of London is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to join their team.BackgroundThis positions primary focus is network operations, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the organisations global network and the UK Data Centres. The positions secondary focus is to manage new implementations and projects, ensuring successful delivery and transition into the BAU (Business As Usual) operating model.You will be required to work with and manage external IT vendors, suppliers and third parties. This includes network providers, such as NTT and Verizon, and suppliers of network equipment, such as Cisco and Checkpoint.The Key service activities are maintaining the Network BAU operations for the Banks IT Network. This includes the WAN, LAN, Firewall and Data Centre infrastructure and the management of the external vendors that provide these services. BAU operations includes a number to activities, including:

  • Responding to incidents.
  • Participating in the Service Delivery and Problem management processes.
  • Participation in the Change process.
  • Supporting planned work, such as Black Building tests and planned network outages.
  • Regular software upgrades across the network infrastructure to address operational and security issues.
  • Ensuring that the Network teams standards and processes are kept updated on a regular basis.
  • Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Ensure all day-to-day network operations activities are performed in accordance with standards, policies and procedures.
  • Manage and lead the network related work streams of projects and ensure that project deliverables are executed in a timely fashion. Supervise, plan and manage resources within the network team and external vendors on all project tasks.
  • Undertake preventative maintenance using analysis and forecasting for capacity planning and patching. Propose and present proposed capacity upgrades to management ensuring that the appropriate information and justification is provided.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the more junior members of the Network team, and to the other teams within IT, on all Network related matters.
  • Provide principal support to the implementation, support and maintenance of the organisations network security infrastructure, including devices providing network access, firewall, content filtering, intrusion detection and proxy services.
  • Ensure all design, implementation, support and maintenance activities adhere to the organisations system development life cycle. Support and contribute to the organisations network projects and initiatives as required.
  • Work with internal audit, compliance and risk management departments to ensure that the environment conforms to standards and policies. A special focus will be working with the Internal Audit team on the various audits that are conducted on a regular basis ensuring that any audit recommendations are actioned.
  • Work with the IT Architecture teams help to define the future network technologies ensuring that they conform to the banks strategic and architectural standards.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications
  • Evidence of providing 3rd level support for large network environments.
  • Evidence of working in a Financial Services or high pressure environment. Evidence of working on a variety of network related projects.
  • Evidence of working on a variety of Data Centre projects.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience on Cisco routers/switches and their architecture.
  • Expert knowledge of Cisco IOS.
  • Good knowledge of Cisco NXOS/IOSXE.Expert knowledge of TCP/IP and Networking skills.
  • Expert knowledge on routing skills - OSPF, BGP.Expert knowledge on switching skills - VLAN, STP, RSTP, 802.1q, 802.3ad.
  • Expert knowledge on Quality of Service - CBWFQ, policing and shaping.
  • Excellent understanding of VPN technologies - GRE, DMVPN, MPLS VPN.
  • Good knowledge of multicast skills - MSDP, IGMP, PIM-SM.
  • Good understanding of F5 load balancing products.
  • Excellent knowledge of Checkpoint firewalls.
  • Excellent knowledge of Palo Alto firewalls or other application layer firewalls.
  • Good experience of supporting Market Data connectivity.
  • Good understanding of structured cabling technologies.
