We research, evaluate, analyse and make recommendations to help improve the effectivenessof public policy and practice.Recent projects include:

  • An evaluation of a government funded programme supporting young people at risk of serious violence into employment-related opportunities
  • A mixed methods evaluation of a charity funded programme supporting pregnant women and parents with young children accessing support activities to give their children the best start in life
  • Economic modelling / cost-benefit-analysis of the labour market impact of defining clearer career pathways for cyber security professionals
  • An evaluation of a major transformational programme to help government make best use of its data assets
  • An evaluation of a large-scale government funding package supporting VCSE organisations during the pandemic
  • An evaluation of the impact of a business development bank funding package using econometric techniques such as difference-in-difference modelling and synthetic control
Overall job purposeThe advertised role would sit within ECDs Social Policy Team. We are an expanding team and the role presents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual to help grow our work. We are considering applicants at Senior Consultant level, with applicantsexpected to have at least 4 years prior analysis/research, policy or consulting experience.Sector experience is welcome and could come from a range of areas including:
  • social welfare, poverty, and inequality
  • disability, equality, diversity and inclusion
  • employment, education and skills
  • early years provision
  • justice, immigration and policing
However we are also keen to hear your key areas of interest and expertise in relation to social and economic analysis.Your role within our team will be to:Key responsibilities
  • Lead the planning and delivery of key client projects, including conducting and managing economic, econometric and at times qualitative data analysis, reporting and visualisation
  • Support the business in identifying and winning new work opportunities, including helping to write proposals and research methodologies
  • Liaise with clients to support their requirements
  • Mentor and coach junior staff, as required, seeking to support team development
  • Undertake stakeholder interviews, workshops and focus groups
  • Undertake training to support your technical, business and personal skills development
Key Requirements
  • Strong academic record (minimum 2.1 Honours Degree; post-graduate qualification desirable) in Economics, Statistics, Humanities & Social Sciences, or Research Methods (or similar)
  • Previous analysis / research, policy or consulting experience, ideally with a data or quantitative evaluation focus
  • Strong technical skills, e.g. statistical / econometric (using Excel and Stata, SPSS or R) or cost-benefit (using Green Book techniques). Experience of data visualisation software, e.g. PowerBI, desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication, including experience of presenting complex ideas clearly and concisely
  • Attention to detail, strong project management skills, and demonstrable experience of the delivery of high-quality outputs
  • Experience of working with clients, ideally public sector, and in a client-focused environment
Currently we have ECD team members based in London, Cambridge, Belfast, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Leeds, but we have offices throughout the UK and are willing to consider new appointments based in any of these.
