Job Description

Wehave an exciting opportunityavailable for a Science Educatorto join one of the world’s leading research Institutes at a crucial time in its evolution, and play a definitive role in shaping it for the future. You will join us on apart-time (0.7FTE, this role works 3.5 days per week), temporarybasis of 9 months,andin return, you will receive a competitive salary from £42,500 per annum pro rata, subject to skills and experience.As this role will primarily be working with Camden schools, the post holder will be expected to take the majority of their annual leave during the school holidays.TheScience Educator roleThis role is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience of classroom teaching and science education outreach to join our team, who aim to inspire the next generation of children and show them that science is ‘for them’. The post-holder can expectto have numerous opportunities to develop a wide range of skills in communication, project management and science.Reporting to the Education Manager, the Science Educator will be based in the Education team, which sits within the wider Community and Public Engagement team. The post-holder will work closely with the other members of the Education teamand with our school contacts.Responsibilities of ourScience Educator:These include but are not limited to:

  • Delivery of activities for the Crick’s Education outreach programme including: interactive STEM workshops for primary school classes and practical science investigations for secondary school students
  • Designing and project managing the development of novel activities for the Crick’s Education programme
  • Working closely with external education professionals to ensure that Crick’s Education material are fit for purpose, and adapt to meet the needs of the changing a curricula and local school requirements, and that schools are supported in their role to facilitatedelivery of our activities
  • Providing advice, guidance and training to other Crick staff to ensure Crick outreach is high quality and complements and extends the science curriculum, whilst providing relevant information on routes into STEM careers
  • Uphold and promote the Crick’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI); and actively contribute to an inclusive workplace culture
  • Other tasks relevant to the post according to Institute requirements
Skills and experience we are looking for in ourScience Educator:
  • BScor equivalent in a science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) subject and a broad scientific knowledge
  • PGCE or equivalent with significant experience of teaching science in a secondary school, or leading science in a primary school
  • A proven ability to deliver practical science workshops to classes of 30 primary school children, with an understanding of how to successfully engage children from Year 1 to Year 6
  • Experience of project managing the development of curriculum-linked, packages of practical science education outreach activities for KS3 teachers to use with their classesAn understanding of the current UK National Curriculum for science, and the way thatscience is taught in schools as well the role of the informal science education sector and understanding of the importance of STEM qualifications for career options
  • Sound knowledge of relevant health and safety issues, and an ability to do risk assessments on outreach activities
  • Energy and drive, with an ability to work confidently and engagingly with young people aged 5-18
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, appropriate for a diverse audience that includes young children
  • A good organiser with the abilities to work independently, to prioritise own work using own initiative and to be proactive and self-motivated
  • Computer literacy, particularly the effective use of the Microsoft suite of packages
  • An ability to build effective relationships with a range of stakeholders, including scientists and teachers
  • A flexible, strong team-player who can adapt easily to different working styles
  • An interest in working with young people aged 5-18 to help them develop their skills in scientific enquiry and appreciate the range of STEM careers available
Practicalities
  • The role involves some off-site manual handling that includes moving equipment within and between schools, so the post-holder should therefore be capable of lifting and carrying boxes up several flights of stairs
  • Crick events sometimes (approximately 2-3 times per year) run in the evenings and weekends, so the candidate should be willing to occasionally work at these times
  • As this role will primarily be working with Camden schools, the post holder will be expected to take the majority of their annual leave during the school holidays
  • Appointment to the post will be subject to an enhanced DBS check
